I am compelled to write this letter to you concerning the BOXOFFICE November 1999 issue's Special Report onj Digital Cinema. While I believe in and am in favor 08 better projection processes for the moviel patrons this industry depends on, a red flag should be raised if the future techno-] logical advances discussed do become aj reality, further homogenizing an enterJ tainment source which at one time in recent history was as unique in character as the theatre a patron chose to visit to sea the latest or best in motion picture enterj tainment. The day-and-date releasing touted bjfl Digital Cinema proponents should in fact be looked upon with trepidation bjj exhibitors. Having every theatre in thd world playing the exact same titles at thd exact same time takes away from thd excitement of going to the movies and id more akin to television programming Additionally, the ability for a film to plaj everywhere at once will lead to the demisd of second-run houses and possibly thd whole of independent exhibition. And, nd doubt, the turnaround time between the! atrical release and television release will shorten even further, giving the patron thd option to wait [a few] weeks to view thj product at home. Further, by eliminating prints, jobs will be eliminated as well, downsizing thd industry while adding built-in obsolea cence to projection equipment as newel more efficient (and, of course, morl expensive) equipment is introduced. Thj black box syndrome may also find its waj into this new technology in the same waj it did to plague cable and satellite televfl sion, with illegal decoders unscrambling studio signals, allowing the viewer fraj access to Hollywood's pictures. Perhaps inventing better product vif scripts, actors and marketing should bt this industry's first concern, as those [el© ments] are not scrutinized enough.
