SPECIAL REPORT: Barometer Star Poll Results 34 Boxoiiki
JJj'iJjruce Willis obviously doesn't have ddjjjjpsychic powers or he probably Si? 1 would have foregone "Breakfast of Champions" and "The Story of Us." But he can thank his "Sixth Sense" for his position as Male Star of the Year, as voted by you, the BOXOFFICE reader. Willis is currently starring in Warner Bros.' "The Whole Nine Yards" as a hitman who moves to suburbia. Next up is Buena Vista's "The Kid," in which Willis' younger self visits his current incarnation to impart advice; MCM's "Outlaws," about two bank robbers who fall for their kidnapping victim; and Buena Vista's "Unbreakable," a reteaming with "Sixth Sense" scripter M. Night Shyamalan for a supernatural thriller in which a man discovers something uncanny about himself after a devastating accident. Sounds like a "Sense"-ible move. "The Green Mile's" Tom Hanks narrowly missed the top spot in our poll, but it's not as though his mantel is wanting for trophies. Oscar's sure to take note of Hanks' reverse DeNiro, losing 50 pounds for Fox's Robert Zemeckis-helmed desert island drama "Cast Away," after which he'll steal the stage as Dean Martin in Warner Bros.' Martin Scorsese-directed biopic "Dino." In third is Kevin Spacey for his knockout portrayal of a man with the midlife crisis of the millennium in "American Beauty." In April, Spacey will be seen in Lions Gate's "The Big Kahuna," and set for a holiday release this year is "Pay it Forward," in which Spacey plays a teacher who incites his students to good deeds, ultimately transforming the town. ::: 111.. ffemale Star of the Year Julia Roberts has "Runaway" with BOXOFFICE readers' hearts who no doubt woud love to tie the "Nott" with the beautiful star of two of 1 999's biggest blockbusters. After her success in the romantic comedies "Runaway Bride" and "Notting Hill," Roberts takes a dramatic turn as a secretary who exposes her law firm's cover-up of a toxic waste spill in Universal's "Erin Brokovich." And exhibitors will soon be able to tear stubs for "The Moviegoer," co-starring Tim Robbins and written and directed by Terrence Malick. There's still something about secondplace winner Cameron Diaz, who astounded fans with her frowzy appearance in "Being John Malkovich"; the subsequent acclaim for her role in the bizarre Dlack comedy proved that she's an actress who doesn't need to go glam to turn leads. And in "Any Given Sunday," she howed a tough side that's bound to resurface in Columbia's feature version of "Charlie's Angels," where she'll be kickbutt and taking names along with Drew Barrymore and Lucy Liu. Also comng up for Diaz is New Line's "Things You Can Tell Just By Looking At Her" and 'Invisible Circus" as well as a voice role n DreamWorks' animated "Shrek." Julianne Moore tackled two equally emotional but entirely divergent roles in the downbeat wartime romance "The End of the Affair" and Paul Thomas Anderson's surreal epic drama "Magnolia," not to mention acclaimed turns in "An Ideal Husband," "A Map of the World" and "Cookie's Fortune." Her part in the Paramount comedy "Ladies' Man," based on the Saturday Night Live sketch of the same name, should be a 1 80-degree turn from her characters Linda Partridge, Sarah Miles or Amber Waves. Moore will also appear with Male Star of the Year Bruce Willis in Buena Vista's "Unbreakable." ::! ::] jjj ittle Haley Joel Osment beat humonjjj gous Michael Clarke Duncan? Only Sjjon a list. The 12-year-old "Sixth Sense" star creamed the competition in the Male Breakout Star of the Year, receiving more votes than the runners-up combined. Osment moves forward with "Pay It Forward" as a student who helps to change his community by doing good deeds. While Osment stars with Male Star #3 (Kevin Spacey) in "Forward," "The Green Mile's" Duncan headlines with Male Star #1 (Bruce Willis) in "The Whole Nine Yards." And third-place winner Wes Bentley of "American Beauty" has two projects lined up: Artisan's "Soul Survivors," in which a girl who's been in an accident can't discern hallucinations from reality, and United Artists' "Kingdom Come," about a wealthy landowner who's confronted by the wife and child he abandoned years earlier. ::: ::: Jjj jjj arrie-Anne Moss, Keanu Reeves' jjj jjipartner-in-vinyl in "The Matrix," is Ati^ the winner of the Female Breakout Star of the Year title. The 29-year-old actress from Vancouver will head up another sci-fi/action mission as Commander Kate Bowman in Warner Bros.' Val Kilmer starrer "Red Planet." She also stars with Burt Reynolds and Richard Dreyfuss in Buena Vista's "The Crew," and with Guy Pearce in the Christopher Nolan-helmed "Memento." Mena Suvari was a close second; "American Beauty's" gorgeous but troubled cheerleader joins the squad again in New Line's "Sugar and Spice," in which a pompon girl turns to crime to support the lifestyle to which she's grown accustomed; she'll also play the object of the titular nerd's affections in Columbia's "Loser." Third-place winner Hilary Swank wowed audiences with her performance as the transgendered Brandon Teena in "Boys Don't Cry"; no projects are set up for the actress previously best known as "The Next Karate Kid," but that's likely to change following the buzz from this surprise art-house hit.
