BIOGRAPHY<br />

Br<strong><strong>an</strong>d</strong>on Smith is a graduate<br />

research assist<strong>an</strong>t in the Space<br />

Systems Design Laboratory at<br />

the Georgia Institute <strong>of</strong><br />

Technology. Br<strong><strong>an</strong>d</strong>on has<br />

previously interned at NASA<br />

Jet Propulsion Laboratory,<br />

NASA L<strong>an</strong>gley Research<br />

Center, NASA Ames Research<br />

Center, Andrews Space, <strong><strong>an</strong>d</strong><br />

Sikorsky Aircraft Corporation.<br />

His research has focused on<br />

technology development <strong>of</strong><br />

supersonic <strong><strong>an</strong>d</strong> hypersonic IADs. Br<strong><strong>an</strong>d</strong>on is currently<br />

developing modeling <strong><strong>an</strong>d</strong> simulation capabilities to predict<br />

pitch oscillation for supersonic IADs at Mars. He has a BS<br />

in Aerospace Engineering from Georgia Tech <strong><strong>an</strong>d</strong> recently<br />

completed his MS in Aerospace Engineering from Georgia<br />

Tech in December 2010. He is co-advised by Dr. Robert<br />

Braun <strong><strong>an</strong>d</strong> Dr. I<strong>an</strong> Clark.<br />

<strong><strong>an</strong>d</strong> the principal author or co-author <strong>of</strong> over 175 technical<br />

publications in the fields <strong>of</strong> pl<strong>an</strong>etary exploration,<br />

atmospheric entry, multidisciplinary design optimization,<br />

<strong><strong>an</strong>d</strong> systems engineering. Dr. Braun is currently serving as<br />

the NASA Chief Technologist.<br />

I<strong>an</strong> Clark is a visiting assist<strong>an</strong>t<br />

pr<strong>of</strong>essor at the Georgia<br />

Institute <strong>of</strong> Technology <strong><strong>an</strong>d</strong> <strong>an</strong><br />

employee <strong>of</strong> the Jet Propulsion<br />

Laboratory. He received his<br />

PhD from the Georgia Institute<br />

<strong>of</strong> Technology, where he also<br />

received his BS <strong><strong>an</strong>d</strong> MS. I<strong>an</strong>'s<br />

current research involves<br />

developing <strong><strong>an</strong>d</strong> maturing IADs<br />

for use during atmospheric<br />

entry. As part <strong>of</strong> this research,<br />

Dr. Clark has worked on<br />

conceptual IAD system design,<br />

entry flight mech<strong>an</strong>ics trades, <strong><strong>an</strong>d</strong> the development <strong>of</strong> fluidstructure<br />

interaction codes capable <strong>of</strong> predicting the<br />

behavior <strong>of</strong> flexible decelerators.<br />

Robert Braun is <strong>an</strong> Associate<br />

Pr<strong>of</strong>essor in the D<strong>an</strong>iel<br />

Guggenheim School <strong>of</strong><br />

Aerospace Engineering at the<br />

Georgia Institute <strong>of</strong><br />

Technology. As Director <strong>of</strong><br />

Georgia Tech’ s Space Systems<br />

Design Laboratory, he leads a<br />

research program focused on<br />

the design <strong>of</strong> adv<strong>an</strong>ced flight<br />

systems <strong><strong>an</strong>d</strong> technologies for<br />

pl<strong>an</strong>etary exploration. He is responsible for undergraduate<br />

<strong><strong>an</strong>d</strong> graduate level instruction in the areas <strong>of</strong> space systems<br />

design, astrodynamics <strong><strong>an</strong>d</strong> pl<strong>an</strong>etary entry. Prior to coming<br />

to Georgia Tech, Dr. Braun worked at NASA L<strong>an</strong>gley<br />

Research Center for sixteen years where he contributed to<br />

the design, development, test, <strong><strong>an</strong>d</strong> operation <strong>of</strong> several<br />

robotic space flight systems. Dr. Braun is <strong>an</strong> AIAA Fellow<br />
