" New Lubbock Theatre Will Be UOO Seater LUBBOCK, TEX.—Plans already have been revised to double the capacity of the newest of the Preston E. Smith Theatres here. Original plans called for a 550-seat house. Before ground was broken, Smith announced an 1,100-seater will be built, and construction is proceeding according to these specifications. He estimated the investment will exceed $100,000. Smith approved the alteration, he said, when expert studies of building trends convinced him the larger theatre will be needed to serve the rapidly developing northwest Lubbock area w'here it is located. It will be called the Arnett-Benson for a nearby residence addition of that name. The theatre, scheduled for completion in the late summer, will be the fifth of the Smith enterprises here. He also operates the State. Tech. Plains and Five-Points Drive-In. Tige Formby is supervising the operations of the circuit while Smith, representative from the Lubbock district, is attending a special session of the Texas legislature in Austin. Sinith is the only showman among the 181 members of the legislative bodies. Robert Clemmons Named Manager at Fort Worth FORT WORTH—Robert H. Clemmons, well-known Texas theatreman, has been named manager of the six Community Theatres here, owned by L. N. Crim of Kilgore. Clemmons, former part owner of the Arcadia in Dallas, is the brother of the late Joe E. Clemmons and Tom Clemmons, early organizers of the Jefferson Amusement Co. Clemmons sold his interest in the Arcadia several years ago and retired temporarily. He formerly operated theatres in Shreveport for Crim, and other theatres in the Dallas area. Robert Wilkes, former booker for Warners and Republic in Dallas, has been employed by Clemmons to book for the theatres. Products of these houses were formerly bought and booked by the Phil Isley Theatres in Dallas. Mart Cole Constructing New Yoakum, Tex., House YOAKTJM. TEX.—Construction has begun on a new Mart Cole theatre here which will cost $100,000. It will seat approximately 1.000. Cole, who owns theatres and driveins throughout south Texas, also purchased a ten-acre site on Highway 77 for a newozoner. Akdar Theatre at Tulsa To Become Ballroom TULSA. OKLA.—The Akdar Theatre, one of Tulsa's oldest, will be remodeled into a large ballroom this spring. The changeover is expected to cost $15,000. The Akdar was opened Feb. 2, 1925, as a legitimate theatre, then switched to pictures. Alba to Elmer Bisbee ALBA, TEX.—Elmer, Bisbee, who formerly operated theatres in Illinois, has purchased the Alba Theatre here. Interstate niiiuic s :> Chief v,f/iei Bars Dur:» Ingrid Bergman Picture DALLAS—The Ingrid Bergman-Roberto Rossellini film, "Stromboli," will not be shown in Interstate Theatres, President Karl Hoblitzelle has announced, becau.se of the "circumstances surrounding the picture." Hoblitzelle's statement said, "For nearly half a century Interstate Theatres has been, proud of its slogan, 'dedicated to community service.' "We regret exceedingly the unfortunate circumstances and the publicity which surround the picture, 'Stromboli.' Without having any desire to act as self-appointed censors, we feel that we would be rendering our communities a disservice to exhibit this picture. Under these circumstances, we do not intend to exhibit 'Stromboli.' Interstate Theatres comprises approximately 175 theatres throughout Texas and in Albuquerque, N. M., with main offices in Dallas. Texas Representative Seeks Statewide Film Ban AUSTIN—The house of representatives has referred to a committee a resolution seeking to ban the "Stromboli" from being shown in Texas. The house, by a vote of 67 to 43, refused to give the resolution immediate attention. It went automatically to the house state affairs committee. The resolution was introduced by R. E. Blount, Big Spring representative and former University of Texas football star. Under the resolution, the picture would be "banned and unequivocally prevented from being exhibited in the state of Texas, not because of what will be shown in the picture but because of the immoral incident it attempts to glorify, condone and glamorize at the expense of detriment to and degeneration of our younger, impressionable society." No mention of the names Ingrid Bergman GOLD CARD AWARDED — William O'Donnell of Dallas, representative of Variety International, presents gold card life membership in the Variety Club of Houston to John Paul Goodwin. or Roberto Rossellini was made in the resolution. Texas Circuit Ofiicials Vary on 'Stromboli' Runs DALLAS—Following the Hoblitzelle action, spokesmen in Austin .said that "Stromboli" would not be shown in five houses operated by the Eddie Joseph circuit. Horace Falls, film buyer for the Phil I.sley circuit, said the film would not be run in any of its 15 theatres in Texas and Los Angeles. Officials of the Jefferson Amusement Co. were to make a decision this week whether "Stromboli" would be shown in any of its 75 houses in Texas. Robb & Rowley circuit officials said they would make a decision later on the film. R. I. Payne, executive vice-president of Theatre Enterprises. Inc., operators of 125 houses, said that company officials had not discussed the picture. Theodore Routt, booker for the Long circuit, said that he did not know of any decision which might have been made on running the film. The Dallas Federation of Women's Clubs will ask the state legislature to enact a law providing for a fine of not less than $5,000 to be imposed on any theatre in the state which exhibits "Stromboli." Oppose Ingrid Bergman Films ROGERS, ARK.—The Rogers Ministerial Alliance has urged theatres in this city not to book any Ingrid Bergman pictures on the ground that the actress has demonstrated "moral turpitude." The ministers also criticized RKO in handling distribution of the film for its "apparent willingness to capitalize financially on such a sordid affair." Opens General Electric New Office in Houston HOUSTON—The electronics department of General Electric has opened a sales office in the Electric building here. C. G. Allen will be in charge of radio and television receivers, Louis Peine of radio communications equipment and D. F. Booth of replacement tubes and parts. The new office will be under the supervision of the Dallas office, district headquarters for the southwestern operations. This brings the department's total to nine main district offices and ten branches. Mrs. W. T. Howze and Son Take Back Operation BROWNFIELD, TEX.—Mrs. W. T. Howze and son Sam Jones have re.sumed the operation of the Brownfield theatres. For the past five years the Rialto, Ritz and Rio have been operated by the le.ssee. Hiram Parks. Parks has returned to Lubbock where ho owns theatre interests. BOXOFFICE :: February 11, 1950 sw 91
