NAVY ENGINEERING BULLETIN MARCH 2003
43
systematic way of reviewing
maintenance requirements with
safety. Pilot programmes for the
ANZAC frigate class together with
the vast experience gained
through the RN implementation
have largely dispelled doubts that
RCM will work in the Australian
naval context.
However, it is clear there is now a
need to set an overall direction
for RCM for the RAN as a whole
and to set up the management
processes needed to ensure that
outputs are properly
implemented, that the revised
maintenance programmes are
adhered to by each operational
unit and that operators and
maintainers are adequately
trained in new maintenance
procedures.
Further application of RCM will
occur over the forthcoming
months and several members of
the Defence and Contractor
community will have the
opportunity of playing their part
in what promises to be a turning
point in maintenance thinking in
the RAN.
For further information on the
application of RCM within the
RAN, contact Ian O’Hara, Director
of the Centre for Maritime
Engineering or Graham
McDonald, also of CME at
Defence Plaza, Sydney on 02
9377 2335 and 02 9377 2979,
respectively.
