Nature. -Time <strong>and</strong> percussi<strong>on</strong>.<br />

Graduati<strong>on</strong>s.— Graduated originally from 2 to 53^, then from<br />

2 to 65, <strong>and</strong> in <strong>fuzes</strong> of recent manufacture from 6 to 70<br />

(lowest <strong>and</strong> highest figures are 6 <strong>and</strong> 70) in hundreds of metres<br />

(50 = 5,000 metres) ;each of the smallest divisi<strong>on</strong>s is equivalent<br />

to 50 metres of range.<br />

When the setting mark is opposite the cross <strong>on</strong> the disc<br />

covering the gas escape, the fuze is set for percussi<strong>on</strong>.<br />

The fuze is set at X when the shell is intended for use as case<br />

shot (this X is sometimes omitted).<br />

Material. — Aluminium, withcap of brass or steel.<br />

* Fuzes have heen found graduated up to 7,150 metres (7,820 yards).<br />

f With normal charge; the super-charge is apparently not used with<br />

shrapnel.
