STOW—
Notes on
OKLAHOMA CITY—Prizes of all kinds and
favors, including orchids, were given away at
the UTOO convention. Door prizes were supplied
by Filmack Trailer Service. United Film
Service, Alexander Film Co. and Sturm's, a
clothing store. Bob Walker of Fruit a. Colo.,
saw that the women and many of the men
were wearing tiny orchids. Lorraine Carbons
also had favors for those registering.
Mark Sheridan and Jimmie Gillespie, both
of 20th-Fox. Dallas, were in for the 55mm
screening at the Criterion which opened the
Mollie Goerke of Canton
convention program,
and Ann Thome, wife of Eddie, outgoing
president of UTOO, wore white doeskin Indian
dresses, bedecked with beads and bells,
to the ranch party buffet. Mollie brought
them from her stomping grounds for the
western event. Ann added a feather to her
tresses for an added effect.
Incidentally, the ranch party buffet, with
entertainment, and the cocktail party preceding
and Maxine and Eldon Peek of Oklahoma
Theatre Supply as hosts, drew more
than 400 men and women, while the dinner
dance, the closing night, had a crowd of about
325. We wonder why.
Oklahoma Convention
Governor Gary, left, was introduced at
the convention dinner dance by Ed
Thorne, new board chairman and outgoing
president, right. The governor
made a few remarks, then Thorne turned
the program to Al Good and his orchestra.
The wives of the exhibitors were guests at a
luncheon and style show, with fashions from
Sturm's and favors from Kamber's & Kerr's.
We understand the film clinic, moderated
by Seibert Worley, Shamrock. Tex., was quite
lively and interesting.
Claude Motley of Video was the only reelected
officer in the new lineup. He's treasurer
again. The new board includes 40 members
and an honorary member, C. B. Akers.
Tulsa, whose longtime loyalty to the industry
on legislative matters in Oklahoma is widely
recognized.
Opal Gray of Chickasha, board member,
found she had a little extra time when she
stopped matinees, so now she's in the housebuilding
business. She's also interested in
the western show, made up of early-day
characters such as Jesse James, all in wax,
of course, which is due to play the Royal
American circuit. Meantime, the show is
booked for some theatres and an Oklahoma
City exposition. Mike Carmichael and Jack
Emmenhiser also are interested in the western
show.
Ray Hughes of Heavener had returned from
The dinner dance, sponsored by the Coca-Cola Co. at the UTOO convention, was
held in the Persian room of the Skirvin Tower. Part of the official family and the
governor of the state were seated at this table. At bottom of the picture, center, is
the new president, Bernard McKenna jr., and his wife. Clockwise, from McKenna, are
Mrs. Thorne, Eddie Thorne (outgoing president and new board chairman), Gov. Raymond
Gary, E. N. Gault and Charley A. Bordelais jr. of the Coca-Cola Co., Mrs. E. R.
Slocum (wife of UTOO's executive director), Earl Snyder jr. and wife of Tulsa.
Manley Popcorn gave a cocktail party preceding the dinner.
California with a suntan. UTOO was quite
SWlsh, using the Perle Mesta suite for the
convention's press room.
R. J. O'Donnell of Dallas found us foggedin
and spent nearly all of the opening day of
the UTOO convention in the air over Oklahoma
City. His plane finally landed in Tulsa,
then he returned to Dallas, started out again
the next day and made it. His talk was slated
for the opening luncheon, but didn't occur
until the closing afternoon's session.
The Carl Burtons of Fort Smith were taking
in the convention, and no doubt Carl
got a few pointers from friend Red Slocum
on planning such a gathering since he's in
charge of putting together a similar convention
in Hot Springs. His fellow exhibitors
think of everything—the racing season
will still be on when the showmen gather
to exchange theatre problems in Hot Springs.
Such luck.
UTOO is trying something new with three
regional vice-presidents: namely, Seibert
Worley of Shamrock, C. D. "Buddy" Hicks of
Nowata and Eddie Jones of Tulsa.
Jim Byrd, with MGM 28 years, is retiring
March 1. we heard at the Manley open house
preceding the UTOO dinner and dance.
Byrd currently is city salesman, but has
traveled the entire state. He's winding up 45
years in the business. He was branch manager
for Warner Bros, for four years, and once
sold for 20th-Fox.
Very attractive convention badges were
supplied by Manley. Designed by Ralph
Warner, they were quite colorful and different.
When the clock struck 1, the band leader
at the UTOO dance announced there would
be another hour of dancing, courtesy Ralph
Warner and Manley. And, so it was that
the closing event went on an extra hour.
Elizabeth Tucker, formerly of Pauls Valley,
is now working parttime for the Lakeside.
