Ed Branch was the recipient of the latest
portable RCA TV set for his hospital room
where he is undergoing treatment for several
more weeks. The set came from field engineers
and fellow workers at the RCA Service
office where he is chief clerk.
Col. Tom L. Taylor, formerly with Universal
as a salesman for a number of years, was
married Sunday (11) to Mrs. Bess Rose in St.
Joseph at the home of her brother.
The ceremony
was appropriately set on Veterans
Day for the retired colonel, who aside from
his industry experience, served in the two
world wars in both the British (he was born
in Yorkshire, England) and American armies.
His military duties included service with
Capt. Harry Ttuman, General Eisenhower.
A former British Army lightweight boxer, he
judged Golden Gloves competitions for many
years. The first Mrs. Taylor died in 1949.
Elmer C. Rhoden sr., president of National
Theatres, visited the Pox Midwest division
offices and his two sons, Elmer jr. and
Clark. Elmer jr. is president of Commonwealth
Theatres and Clark not only handles
his father's business interests in this area
but owns and operates the Waldo Theatre.
Rhoden sr. spoke to a staff session in enthusiastic
terms about Cinemiracle and suggested
the public needs to have the notion
dispelled that current theatre attractions will
soon be available on TV screens. This Is an
industry selling Job, he pointed out.
Harold Lyon, genial manager of Paramount
Theatre, was having a wonderful time Sunday
totaling the ticket sales on "Giant" when
the adding machine broke down. As everyone
knows, Sunday is not a good day for any kind
of machinery to break down but maybe it was
a good thing he was away from the theatre
for a while, arranging for the loan of another
adding machine. The doorman told him "four
big strapping fellows wearing broad-rimmed
hats" wanted to see the manager after they
had seen the show. They identified themselves
as Texans who resented the somewhat
unflattering portrait of Texans the picture
drew. "Maybe I'll have to start carrying a
six-shooter until the picture's run is over,"
Lyon commented.
Jack Ragar, booker at Columbia several
years, will move to Republic Monday (19)
has had a new sig cut made which includes
the theatre's original name, Thespian Hall,
and carries an underline that the theatre
will celebrate its 100th anniversary in 1957.
There is additional interest in that it was
used as a hospital during the Civil war . . .
Dallas Area May Be Site
For Filming TV Series
DALLAS—Allen H. Miner, the film director
who is currently at work on Warners'
"The Old Man and the Sea," is exploring
the possibility of filming a TV drama series
in the Dallas area.
Miner, visiting friends here, said the region
is "geographically more interesting than
the locales of many TV series, and deserves
investigation." However, no definite plans
were announced.
