36. Malaysia’s Infrastructure as measured by the
extent to which basic, technological, scientific and
human resources meet the needs of business is
ranked at 25 th
position (2012:26 th ). Among the four
competitiveness factors assessed in the report, the
Infrastructure factor is the lowest ranked
indicating that more needs to be done in this area.
While Technological Infrastructure has improved
to 13 th position (2012:16 th ) with higher
investments in telecommunication and improvements
in mobile telephone subscribers, broadband
subscribers and internet bandwidth speed remain
areas of concern. Basic Infrastructure, Health and
Environment as well as Education are areas of
focus for the country. Health and Environment
declined to 42 nd position (2012:36 th ), Basic
Infrastructure to 12 th position (2012:8 th ), Education
to 34 th position (2012:33 rd ) while Scientific
Infrastructure remained at 28 th .
37. Malaysia continues to expand its basic
infrastructure facilities by constantly renewing and
adapting towards new technologies that are available.
Development for various multi-billion rail infrastructure
projects are still in progress which include the Urban
Mass Rapid Transit system as well as a High Speed
Rail project linking Kuala Lumpur to Singapore in just
90 minutes. The KLIA 2 low cost carrier terminal is
also expected to be fully operational this year and will
support additional logistics requirements of the
