Tex<strong>as</strong> Reading Club <strong>Manual</strong> 109<br />

Directions<br />

Alert the storytime parents <strong>and</strong> caregivers to this activity in advance <strong>and</strong> <strong>as</strong>k them to dress their<br />

children in clothes that are appropriate for creating art. Have a few extra smocks or old shirts on<br />

h<strong>and</strong> in c<strong>as</strong>e someone forgets. In advance, cut butcher paper into 5’X 5’ sections. Show<br />

examples of simple shapes such <strong>as</strong> circles, hearts, <strong>and</strong> lines. Let the children use colored chalk<br />

or paint to create their own mural. Display the artwork on a bulletin board.<br />

Games <strong>and</strong> Activities<br />

Duck, Duck, Goose<br />

Seat the children in a circle. Select one child to start the game. That child walks around the<br />

outside of the circle <strong>and</strong> taps each child on the head, saying “Duck, Duck, Duck, Duck, Goose.”<br />

The child who is tapped when the word “Goose” is spoken becomes the Goose. The Goose<br />

st<strong>and</strong>s <strong>and</strong> ch<strong>as</strong>es the first child around the outside of the circle. The first child runs all the way<br />

around the circle <strong>and</strong> sits down in the Goose’s place. If the Goose catches the child, the Goose<br />

sits down <strong>and</strong> the first child is “It” again. If the first child sits down without being tapped by the<br />

Goose, the Goose walks around the outside of the circle <strong>and</strong> repeats the game, saying “Duck,<br />

Duck, Duck … Goose!”<br />

Videos/DVDs/Films<br />

If you have public performance rights, show these videos <strong>and</strong> DVDs, or segments of them, to<br />

the children. Otherwise, display them for home use.<br />
