Preface<br />
This manual is created for the 2006 Tex<strong>as</strong> Reading Club, a program of the <strong>Library</strong> Development<br />
Division of the Tex<strong>as</strong> <strong>State</strong> <strong>Library</strong> <strong>and</strong> <strong>Archives</strong> Commission. The theme is “Reading: The<br />
Sport of Champions!” in English <strong>and</strong> “¡La lectura: el deporte de campeones!” in Spanish, <strong>and</strong><br />
invites children to explore sports <strong>and</strong> games, athletics, athletes, <strong>and</strong> sports legends.<br />
The 2006 Tex<strong>as</strong> Reading Club manual is <strong>available</strong> on CD-Rom <strong>and</strong> online at the Tex<strong>as</strong> <strong>State</strong><br />
<strong>Library</strong> web site, www.tsl.state.tx.us/ld/projects/trc/2006/index.html. Children’s book<br />
illustrator, Frank Remkiewicz, created the artwork for the 2006 Tex<strong>as</strong> Reading Club. Sara<br />
Hickman created an original theme song. Youth librarians from cities large <strong>and</strong> small<br />
throughout Tex<strong>as</strong> wrote the chapters for the 2006 manual. The CD-Rom <strong>and</strong> the online manual<br />
include the artwork by Frank Remkiewicz <strong>and</strong> a musical recording of the original theme song by<br />
Sara Hickman. Ple<strong>as</strong>e read about Frank Remkiewicz, Sara Hickman, <strong>and</strong> the librarians who<br />
wrote manual chapters in the “Something about the Artist” <strong>and</strong> the “Something About the<br />
Authors <strong>and</strong> Songwriters” sections of this manual.<br />
There are many exciting elements in the 2006 Tex<strong>as</strong> Reading Club manual, including:<br />
• A chapter featuring puppet plays, reader’s theater scripts, <strong>and</strong> creative drama.<br />
• A Bilingual Programs Chapter with programs for toddlers <strong>and</strong> preschoolers.<br />
• A Celebrations Programs Chapter with ide<strong>as</strong> to begin <strong>and</strong> end Tex<strong>as</strong> Reading Club<br />
festivities.<br />
• Chapers with programming ide<strong>as</strong> for toddlers <strong>and</strong> preschoolers.<br />
• A chapter with ide<strong>as</strong> for programming for young adults.<br />
If you explore this manual thoroughly, you will find many exciting ide<strong>as</strong> for planning <strong>and</strong><br />
hosting an enjoyable <strong>and</strong> successful 2006 Tex<strong>as</strong> Reading Club.<br />
Ple<strong>as</strong>e <strong>also</strong> note the information concerning public performance of music <strong>and</strong> film in library<br />
programs <strong>and</strong> the summary of the research on the importance of summer reading that are<br />
included in the introduction.<br />
