Olympic Readers<br />

Replicate the Olympic rings, red, green, black, blue, <strong>and</strong> yellow circles, out of construction<br />

paper <strong>and</strong> place them on the bulletin board. Cut out gold, silver, <strong>and</strong> bronze medals using<br />

metallic craft paper, <strong>available</strong> from craft supply stores or on-line from S <strong>and</strong> S Worldwide,<br />

www.snswwide.com, <strong>and</strong> the medal pattern provided at the end of this chapter. Write book titles<br />

on the medals <strong>and</strong> put them on the bulletin board. Alternatively, let the kids put their names on<br />

medals <strong>and</strong> attach them to the bulletin board to celebrate their participation in the Tex<strong>as</strong><br />

Reading Club.<br />

Decorations<br />

Purch<strong>as</strong>e posters from Demco, www.demco.com, that encourage kids to “Join the Winner’s<br />

Circle…Read!” or from Upstart, www.highsmith.com, that proclaim, “Go for the Gold.”<br />

Refreshments<br />

Serve Greek food. If someone in your community is from Greece, <strong>as</strong>k for help. Otherwise, serve<br />

grapes, olives, <strong>and</strong> figs <strong>as</strong> e<strong>as</strong>y snacks, along with some pita bread <strong>and</strong> hummus.<br />

Incentives<br />

ribbons that could be given <strong>as</strong> keepsakes or incentives to program participants. They <strong>also</strong> offer<br />
