2014 South Carolina Nurses Association Meetings: The SCFCNA meets quarterly on the second Tuesday of the month in Columbia. The meetings were held at the South Carolina Nurses Association headquarter. Each meeting includes a program of interest to faith community nurses and health ministers as well as conducting the business of the organization. Meetings were held on the following dates: 1. July 9, 2013– Program: “Hidden in Plain View”; Dr. Dena Rapp, presenter, from River of Justice. The program focused on the problem of child trafficking in the US and on the I-85 corridor. 2. October 8, 2013 – Program: “Ann Overview of Fathers and Families Ministry”; Dawn Pender, Providence Hospital 3. January 14, 2014 – “Update on New FCN Initiatives in Virginia”; Susan Eichelberger, presenter 4. April 8, 2014 – Program: “Overview of the mission and purposes of Mental Health America”; Jean Lambert, MRC and Tim Stewart. Annual Events: 1. Annual Conference, August 10, 2013; “Spirituality and Resiliency” Keynote Speaker: Rev. Alexis Smith, MBA, MDiv, PhD candidate Pre-conference Session: “Key Strategies for Faith Community Program Development and Success”; Jenny Holmes and Georgia Bullington, Spartanburg Congregational Nursing Program 2. Congregational Nursing Foundations Course This course is taught annually to assist those interested in practicing as a Faith Community Nurse to learn the role and scope of practice of this specialty and to provide valuable resources to develop and maintain a viable ministry. Aly Breisch, RN, MSN, a national speaker and expert in Faith Community Nursing is the primary instructor in this course. The course was offered March 13-16, 2014 in Spartanburg. Jenny Holmes and Georgia Bullington provided leadership in organizing the classes and providing lodging and meals for the 13 participants. This was the largest class to date for this course. By moving the course to the Upstate we captured a large number of participants who were commuters. 3. Annual Conference, August 1, 2014 – “Navigating the Chaos in Healthcare: The Role of Faith Communities” Presenters: Rozalynn Goodwin, SC Hospital Association; Lynn Bailey, Lynn Bailey Associates, Debra Seale, RN, MN, Palmetto Health; Tricia Richardson, SC Thrive, Rev. Brenda Kneece, SC Christian Action Coalition, Beth Cecil, RN, FCN, Spartanburg Congregational Nursing Program; Rev. Bobby Farmer, Project Josiah (Combat Veterans Support Groups), and Gloria Neumann, Dorn VA Medical Center. The SCFCNA also has collaborated with Upstate AHEC to develop an online program to introduce nurses and health care workers to the fundamentals of Faith Community Nursing. The course has been renewed this year. The SCFCNA has also been a participant in the SC Faith Sub-Committee of DHEC’s Obesity Strategic Plan. The Association is a proud supporter of the SC Nurses Foundation Palmetto Gold Nurse Recognition Program and has had four of its members named as Palmetto Gold Recipients – Katora Campbell, Georgia Bullington, Mary Mitchell and Jenny Holmes. We congratulate these members for their exemplary contributions to Faith Community Nursing and to the congregations they serve. 99
