Q: Did they come up very often? A: Not too often no. Not anymore, not like they used to. Years ago they did hecause people didn't make wills and wasn't conscious of it like they are now. Noiv all the banks and, well, just everybody advertises the fact that you should have a will and have something settled before you die. But in that day people didn't think about those things at all. They didn't give it consideration and so you didn't handle big estates because there wasn't any too much, there wasn't any big estates, mostly small ones. Q: How did you come to get that position? A: Oh I guess that the)- thought I - guess they assumed that I was capahle of handling - attorneys in Hardin thought that. That was the county seat and they wanted somebody I guess who had a little business ability. Should have some, you know, if you're going to handle somebody else's financial affairs you should have some ahility towards that end. I guess that's ahout it. They asked me one time to run and I ran. Q: Well was it an elective position? A: I was either elected or appointed, one or the other, I can't recall Q: Seems to me it was appointed hy the governor, A: It could be appointed I think. Probably could have been appointed. I forget, hut Q: Now that was a county-wide A Yes, it was county-wide you know Q: Well you don't recall then how you got the position or how you A: All I do know that the attorneys had something to do with it. Rut otherwise I can't recall much about it. You know I remember Rill Cox and other men were saying - even wh~n I was younger and they were all older people, I was friendly toward the attorneys. I never did a lot of business \\-it11 them. We used to stop and - remember when I'd go somrxhere I enjoyed talking to them hecause they were well-read and kept up on things, especially on(, in particular. IIe read a lot. Come hy his place two or three o'clock in the n~orning, you know, I'd he on the way home froni snmeplart.. Even in later years when I r;ime home from Springfield, I'd see his light and I'd stop in and then we'd discuss things n d I liked to discuss things with hini because 11r was alert. IIe didn't have to look at a ~IIJ~J~ r~r s~,nicttrin!: to come up with it. He knea it. I \\-as never no detail man myself. I \\-anted to do solnrthing faster than that. And I could learn a lot from him because he read an11 I didn't have to read it. I could usually get it from him. I wouldn't take time to . . . Q: Who was that?
