Jun Wei is a member of
Students in Free Enterprise
(SIFE) Australia, which
runs a range of programs
challenging students to
apply what they learn in the
classroom to real‐life situations
to benefit their communities.
The Enviroselect program
places students into a team
setting to provide solutions to
environmental problems faced
by small business.
“One of the main reasons I wanted to join
SIFE is that I wanted to meet and integrate
with locals, mix with a different crowd.
It’s been going really well, it really unites
people,” Jun Wei said.
“Our project managers are brilliant and very
inspiring.
“I’ve learnt so much from them and my
team-mates as well.
“Enviroselect is all about encouraging small
businesses to act in a more sustainable
manner and what we do is educate the
general public about what these companies
are doing – thereby encouraging the public
to make a sustainable choice.
“Small businesses sign up to our program
and then we conduct an environmental
audit, and based on the data we collect
we identify problem areas which can be
improved on and give suggestions and
recommendations,” Jun Wei said.
“So far we have worked with small
businesses and cafes, but we’re expanding
into the city next semester.
“We’ve had environmental auditing
training from a professional consultancy
organisation, Green Steps.”
Jun Wei worked with three other students
in a consultative project with a café on
campus at the University to minimise the
business’s impact on the environment. As
a result of the project, the café now offers a
20c cheaper coffee to customers who bring
their own mug, thereby reducing the amount
of paper cup waste, providing a cost benefit
to the customers and raising awareness
about the small, everyday actions that can
make a difference to the environment.
“We educate the public, we give
recommendations, and hopefully we see
change,” Jun Wei said.
