Studies in Psychology
Erlend Kvaale is a third year
Bachelor of Science student,
majoring in Psychology.
His ambition is to pursue a
career that involves some
degree of clinical practice
and some degree of research.
After graduation, he plans to
continue on to Honours and
a Masters or PhD in Clinical
Psychology.
“I am attracted to clinical practice because
it is a field where you can see tangible
outcomes of your work in terms of
improving life for distressed individuals. At
the same time, I am attracted to developing
the understanding and treatment of
psychological disorders through research.”
Erlend found himself inspired by subjects
that covered psychological disorders. In
a typical week as a Bachelor of Science
student, he spends around 45 hours a week
studying. “A quarter of this time is spent on
classes and tutorials, and the remaining
three quarters on reading and writing
on topics that are either directly subjectrelevant
or just absorbing to me.”
While Erlend is studying in Melbourne, he
plans to make use of our proximity to Asia
for travel. “I would like to travel while I'm
staying in Australia; Asian cultures and
histories are fascinating.”
During the first few months at Melbourne,
Erlend found it challenging to speak English
all the time. But it was exciting to check out
a new city and make friends. “I was staying
in the International House college during my
first semester, and it was a lot of fun.”
