28 Bachelor of Environments Daniel has been pleasantly surprised to discover how supportive and approachable his lecturers are. He says this has a lot to do with the University’s teaching methods, which include extra support for students. “The University’s education system has provided me with great opportunities to learn and seek help. Environments offers pathways to a large range of professional graduate programs in design, management, engineering, land and environments and law. 29 Bachelor of Environments Duration 3 years full-time Fees See page 104 Campus Parkville Campus (Some subjects may be taught at the Burnley campus) Entry requirements See pages 119–127 About the Bachelor of Environments The Bachelor of Environments brings together expertise from a range of disciplines across the University, to provide leadership in the study of built and natural environments, and is the only qualification of its kind in Australia. The Bachelor of Environments will give you a broad understanding of the issues and challenges that shape diverse environments, while providing you with the opportunity to focus on an area of specialisation. Full-time students take eight subjects each year for three years. In your first year, you will take six subjects from a range of Bachelor of Environments interdisciplinary subjects comprising the two core subjects of Natural Environments and Reshaping Environments, and four selected according to your interests. In second and third year you will take nine subjects that comprise a major. The major sequence will progressively build a depth of disciplinary focus and culminate in a capstone subject that uses all the knowledge you have gained throughout your major. In addition to the major subjects in your chosen discipline, you will undertake three elective subjects from disciplines within the Bachelor of Environments and six breadth subjects from disciplines outside your chosen area of specialisation. Careers Bachelor of Environments students will graduate into a constantly shifting world. Finding a balance between development and sustainability and, where these issues affect the community, industry and the individual, will be the challenges graduates face. As a graduate of the Bachelor of Environments you will have the knowledge to meet these new challenges in either the public sector or private industry. You will have developed an awareness of environmental impacts and management on a global scale, and an understanding of the professional responsibilities required for shaping and managing environments in a sustainable way. Your career path will depend on your major field of study and your chosen breadth options, as well as any outside interests and extra curricular activities you may pursue. The Bachelor of Environments provides specialised pathways to professional degrees in environment-related areas such as architecture, civil engineering, structural engineering, environmental engineering, construction management, forest management, geomatic engineering, landscape architecture, property, urban horticulture and urban planning as well as a wide range of other professional degrees such as applied commerce, psychology, social work, teaching, law, nursing science, medicine, physiotherapy and veterinary medicine. Depth Developing your specialisation The Bachelor of Environments is an innovative degree being offered by The University of Melbourne that reflects the changing demands and challenges of the world today. Graduates of the Bachelor of Environments will have the ability to consider the environment beyond the short term, and play an active role in understanding the existing environments and maintaining, designing and constructing sustainable areas in which to live, work and visit.
