25. ARP Measures in Concentration Camps<br />

The dangers resulting fram air attacks on industrial plants are<br />

aggravated In the case of Konzentrationslager and ArbeitslaRer bY<br />

the presence of a potentially hostile and un-cooperative labour <strong>for</strong>ce.<br />

To counteract this, elaborate protective measures have been instituted.<br />

Concrete one-man shelters, or one man pits (1.80m. deep) are<br />

provided <strong>for</strong> each guard at strategic points around the camp. A.<br />

system , of trenches connects these one man emplacements and is used. by<br />

rein<strong>for</strong>cements <strong>for</strong> the sentries. Trenches are provided in front of<br />

each building <strong>for</strong> the staff, and a 'system of zig zag trenches may be<br />

built <strong>for</strong> Haftlinge, the materials <strong>for</strong> this purpose being supplied by<br />

the factory directly concerned with the camp. Machine Gun emplacements<br />

around the camp are to be manned in case of direct air attack<br />

and a machine gun post is to cover the camp entrance, with a view to<br />

preventing escapes.<br />

A fire-post is set up in each barrack-block and the Camp<br />

Engineer is responsible <strong>for</strong> the placing of water and sand in all<br />

parts of the camp. To minimise danger, ammunition reserves are<br />

divided and kept in at least two different places. With the Alarm<br />

Luft Gefahr 30 (approach of energy aircraft), camp barriers are moved<br />

into position and the following officials are notified by telephone:<br />

The Fthrer von Dienst is responsible <strong>for</strong> the immediate sounding of<br />

sirens (alternating high and law sounds) and <strong>for</strong> the en<strong>for</strong>cement of<br />

blackout throughout . the camp (only essential lights to remain lit).<br />

He is likewise responsible <strong>for</strong> the iMMediate rein<strong>for</strong>cement of the<br />

ring Of sentries s round the camp. , In case of attack, staff and<br />

workers ate to take cover in the trenches provided. Where no<br />

trenches are provided <strong>for</strong> Haftlinge, these must remain in their<br />

quarter 's; Blockalteste and Stubenalteste . are responsible <strong>for</strong> order<br />

and discipline, and HAftlingeare warned of the risk of being fired<br />

upon if they wander outside.<br />

The Iagerfthrer and his deputy, the Chef and assistant Chef, the<br />

SIX- (First-Aid Assistant) and the camp doctor are to shelter in<br />

separate positians. . The SDG is to remain in a safe place away from<br />

the camp so as to be available <strong>for</strong> 'first-aid immediately after the<br />

attack. Immediately after an air raid, a roll call of the,staff and<br />

H&ftlinge is taken; if any of the latter are missing, Pahndmg<br />

search measures are immediately . put . into effect<br />

In the Absence of the Lagerfahrer, the 7threr . d. WachtstuiPbannes<br />

as his deputy is responsible <strong>for</strong> the en<strong>for</strong>cement of all.necessary<br />

measures.<br />

Upon the sounding of the alarm, the Guard Company and rein<strong>for</strong>cements<br />

are to take up their emergency posts, in "alartrdress" -, with<br />

respirator, steel helmet and weapons. A. disposal squad is to be<br />

<strong>for</strong>med from the guard 'personnel not s on duty, consisting of;<br />
