Radiation Center<br />

Established at ND<br />

A Radiation Chemistr)' Data Center<br />

has been established at the <strong>University</strong>'s<br />

Radiation Laboratorj', it was announced<br />

recently by Pr<strong>of</strong>. Milton Burton,<br />

director <strong>of</strong> the campus research<br />

organization. '<br />

The Center, which \\'ill serve as an<br />

international focal point for the collection,<br />

storage, evaluation and dissemination<br />

<strong>of</strong> radiation chemistr)' data, is<br />

being jointly sponsored by the U. S.<br />

Atomic Energ)' Commission and the<br />

National Bureau <strong>of</strong> Standards.<br />

Pr<strong>of</strong>. Burton said the Center will be<br />

a part <strong>of</strong> the national standard reference<br />

data program <strong>of</strong> the Bureau <strong>of</strong><br />

Standards, thus coordinating data and<br />

activities in all fields <strong>of</strong> tlie physical<br />

sciences.<br />

The program will be organized by<br />

Dr. Albert Ross, associate research<br />

scientist at the Radiation Laborator)',<br />

and will consist <strong>of</strong> four parts: collection<br />

and categorization <strong>of</strong> data; preparation<br />

<strong>of</strong> critical reviews; publication<br />

<strong>of</strong> tables; and answers to specific<br />

queries.<br />

Mechanical Engineering<br />

Reunion Sclieduled<br />

<strong>Notre</strong> <strong>Dame</strong>'s mechanical engineering<br />

department will hold a reunion<br />

dinner in conjunction with<br />

the Annual Meeting <strong>of</strong> the ASME<br />

to be held in Chicago, November<br />

7-11. The dinner will be at<br />

Johnny Lattner's Restaurant (109<br />

W. Madison) at 5 pm on November<br />

Recognized as the foremost producer<br />

<strong>of</strong> specialists in the field <strong>of</strong> radiation<br />

chemistry, the <strong>University</strong>'s Radiation<br />

Laborator)' is engaged in the most extensive<br />

research in this field being undertaken<br />

on any campus.<br />

The nearby Computing Center will<br />

be used with its UNIVAC 1107 computer<br />

to expedite data storage and retrieval.<br />

Program Initiated<br />

With Peru <strong>University</strong><br />

The <strong>University</strong> has announced a<br />

three-year program in which it wiU assbt<br />

in the academic and administrative<br />

development <strong>of</strong> the Pontifical Catholic<br />

<strong>University</strong> <strong>of</strong> Peru. It is <strong>Notre</strong> <strong>Dame</strong>'s<br />

first venture in inter-university cooperation<br />

involving a Latin American institution.<br />

Dr. George N. Shuster, assistant to<br />

the <strong>University</strong> president, said a $577,700<br />

Ford Foundation grant, to be administered<br />

by the t>vo universities, will enable<br />

the Lima institution "to develop<br />

its central administration, rebuild its<br />

curricular <strong>of</strong>Terings, especially in the<br />

natural sciences, and establish an <strong>of</strong>fice<br />

<strong>of</strong> university development."<br />

Shuster said that $226,900 <strong>of</strong> the<br />

grant will be given directly to the<br />

Pontifical Catholic <strong>University</strong> <strong>of</strong> Peru<br />

«-ith the balance <strong>of</strong> $350,800 to be administered<br />

by <strong>Notre</strong> <strong>Dame</strong> in underwriting<br />

the expenses <strong>of</strong> visiting experts,<br />

for exchange <strong>of</strong> pr<strong>of</strong>essors and trainees,<br />

and for laboratory equipment, library<br />

resources and teachinfi: materials.<br />

Plans Under Way for Convention<br />

Jack Tarr's Grand Bahama Hotel in West End, Grand<br />

Bahamas, has been selected as the site for the 1966 International<br />

Convention to be held on April 29, 30 and May 1, 1966. Jack<br />

Tarr's was selected largely because <strong>of</strong> the great alumni demand<br />

to return after the tremendously successful convention there in<br />

1963.<br />

As has been the format in past years, conventioneers will fly<br />

from Fort Lauderdale, West Palm Beach or Miami on Friday<br />

morning arriving at Jack Tarr's around noon for an entire weekend<br />

<strong>of</strong> golf, fishing, smmming, tennis, boating, native music and<br />

dancing. There will be hospitality refreshments to greet you on<br />

arri\'al and a delicious island luau on Friday evening.<br />

Saturday there will be golf, fishing and tennis tournaments<br />

with many prizes available for the rnen and the ladies; and on<br />

Saturday night, the Fort Lauderdale and West Palm Beach Alumni<br />

Clubs will hold their Universal <strong>Notre</strong> <strong>Dame</strong> Night banquet. Representatives<br />

from the <strong>University</strong> will be in attendance and will<br />

address the group.<br />

.•\ftcr Mass on Sunday morning, there will be an island brunch<br />

with all <strong>of</strong> the trimmings in preparation for the afternoon return<br />

flight to the U.S.A.<br />

These conventions have proved to be an unbeatable weekend<br />

<strong>of</strong> fun and relaxation for all concerned. As in the past you will<br />

live in lu.xur>- and enjoy every minute. Waving palms, the gentle<br />

surf and the beautiful island sunsets are there for all to enjoy<br />

along with the finest fishing a\-ailable, and recently added to the<br />

native culture have been two new Hong Kong beauties. Hi Lee<br />

and Wing Wong — cruising to a tiny cay nearby, each one in<br />

beautiful dress — red with embroidered golden Chinese dragons<br />

for good luck. Hi Lee means Beautiful Sea, and her sister. Wing<br />

Wong, translates into Splendid King. These t^vo beauties %vill<br />

permit you to e-xperience a new and beautiful romance as they<br />

sail to the nearby cay. Yes! They are two very beautiful junks.<br />

.\ special convention price is now being set and will be announced<br />

in the vcr)- near future. Gather your friends and plan to<br />

spend the last weekend in April with them and a great many<br />

other alumni and their wives in the Bahamas.<br />
