DAVID C. DOYLE JR. has been named corporate<br />

controller <strong>of</strong> Great Lakes Express, a Midwestern<br />

trucking concern.<br />

DR. JOHN C. MEAGHER, assistant pr<strong>of</strong>essor <strong>of</strong><br />

English at the <strong>University</strong>, has been awarded a<br />

post-doctoral grant for study <strong>of</strong> the New Testament<br />

and early Christianity at the Institut Catholique,<br />

Paris, France. The grant was made by the<br />

Society for Religion and Higher Education, New<br />

Haven, Conn.<br />

REV. JOSEPH J. SIKORA SJ celebrated his<br />

first solemn high Mass recently in Chicago after his<br />

ordination. He b completing his theological studies<br />

at Bcllarmine School <strong>of</strong> Theology, Loyola <strong>University</strong><br />

<strong>of</strong> Chicago.<br />

C.-\RL C. AUSTIN, an agent in the South Bend<br />

district <strong>of</strong> the Prudential Insurance Co., %vas recently<br />

promoted to the position <strong>of</strong> staff manager.<br />

DR. JOSEPH A. MARTELLARO, assistant pr<strong>of</strong>essor<br />

<strong>of</strong> economics at the <strong>University</strong>, received<br />

a Fulbnght grant to lecture at the U. <strong>of</strong><br />

Cordoba in Argentina this summer. His lectures<br />

dealt with the economy <strong>of</strong> underdeveloped nations<br />

and were given in Spanish.<br />

MICHAEL P. MALL.\RDI was recently named<br />

treasurer <strong>of</strong> the Straus Broadcasting Group with<br />

more than 130 subscribing stations.<br />

THOMAS J. SHEEHAN received his doctor <strong>of</strong><br />

philosophy degree from Ohio State U. in commencement<br />

exercises this quarter.<br />

JACK KING and his pretty wife Pat arc linng<br />

it up as parents <strong>of</strong> two, and a dog. So far the<br />

count is even with one boy and one girl. They<br />

arc living outside Gary with the Dunes as a backdrop.<br />

The *'Cobra" has really taken to family<br />

life and even docs his own carpentry. ^Ve are all<br />

looking for%vard to discussing this matter come the<br />

<strong>Notre</strong> Damc-USC weekend.<br />

A few comments must be heard — 'While running<br />

for an Eastern Airlines flight I heard a voice<br />

call my name only to find our good friend TOM<br />

BRENNAN as the originator. Tom is a pilot for<br />

Eastern and based in Washington. He is still batching<br />

it but a little honey dou-n Fort Lauderdale way<br />

is swiftly closing the gap and his days are numbered.<br />

Tom will definitely be among the stalwarts<br />

come our big weekend in October.<br />

GEORGE GROBLE, by far the most cooperative<br />

vice-president this Class ever had, has come<br />

through once more with some information regarding<br />

the Chicago crowd. George writes that BOB<br />

O'NEIL is completing a six-month stay in Tliailand.<br />

Bob is employing his engineering skills in aiding<br />

in the design <strong>of</strong> highwa>*s for the TTiaJIand government.<br />

Bob and Barbara are expecting their<br />

fourth.<br />

Richard J. Hogan '57 has been ordained<br />

to the priesthood by the Most Rev. Martin<br />

D. McNamara DD in the Cathedral <strong>of</strong> St.<br />

Raymond, Joliet, III. after studies at St.<br />

Procopius Seminary, Lisle, III.<br />

By special permission Fr. Hogan's first<br />

Solemn Mass was a concelebration with his<br />

three brothers who are also priests: Rev.<br />

Martin <strong>of</strong> Tours, Chicago; Rev. Benedict<br />

E. Hogan, Mt. Carmel High School, Chicago;<br />

and Rev. Wendell T. Hogan, Mt.<br />

Carmel High School, Houston, Tex.<br />

A native Chicagoan, Fr. Hogan attended<br />

St. Kilian Grade School, Mt. Carmel High<br />

School and gained a bachelor's degree in<br />

English literature at ND. He then studied<br />

philosophy at Mt. Carmel College, Niagara<br />

Falls, Ont., Canada.<br />

From 1957 to 1961 he worked for J. E.<br />

Mcrrion and Co., communit>' developers. He<br />

NEGAN. Speaking <strong>of</strong> Jim, it's best that he goes<br />

on a field trip soon — they arc expecting number<br />

five. TOM HUGUELETT is still keeping the IBM<br />

stock strong. George comments that also present<br />

at the Universal <strong>Notre</strong> <strong>Dame</strong> Night was JIM<br />

CHESTNUT <strong>of</strong> engineering fame, DR. JL\I KEN­<br />

NEDY who is specializing in surgery at Cook<br />

County Hospital and DR. JIM CUSACK.<br />

Lands alive, BOB COYNE has dropped from the<br />

ranks and is set to wed in June (as <strong>of</strong> this writing)<br />

LINAN who is the sales manager for American<br />

Flash . . . Flash . . . BOB COYNE reports that<br />

a friend <strong>of</strong> his saw PAT WILUAMSON. That U<br />

all we have to report at this time.<br />

RICH.ARD HOGAN was ordained for the Joliet<br />

Diocese on May 22. He was joined in the celdration<br />

<strong>of</strong> his first Mass by his three brothers who are<br />

also in the priesthood. Our congratulations and<br />

our thanks to Fr. Hogan for attaining this, the<br />

most successful ''occupation" one could ever<br />

pursue.<br />

GARY GATES is li\-ing in New York and working<br />

with United Press International. Gary a still<br />

single and it looks like he aims to stay that way<br />

for a while.<br />

Only received responses to our proposed charter<br />

flight from three persons, those being Gary, PAUL<br />

FLATTERY from over Staien Island way and<br />

JIM HERRING who does his business from the<br />

grandeur <strong>of</strong> the Pan Am Building. Because <strong>of</strong> the<br />

negative response the flight has been cancelled.<br />

JOE REICH spent a weekend at our little nest in<br />

Manhattan. Joe, PLEASE come back, the plumbing<br />

is now working and wc promise to feed you.<br />

Heard from Pat and T. O. DOYLE and they<br />

definitely will be in South Bend the big weekend<br />

. . . hope DIXIE ^vill join them. Word has it that<br />

Lourdenc and TOM HALEY may make the<br />

scene. Will keep our fingers crossed and hope that<br />

all the Portland crowd will heed their good example.<br />

appointed acting state securities commissioner by<br />

Illinois Secretary <strong>of</strong> State Paul Powell.<br />

LENf JOYNER held a two-man exhibit (with<br />

Rev. Henry Mascotte) recently at St. Mary's College<br />

art galleries. Lem exhibited liturgical items<br />

and enamels.<br />

REV. JOSEPH B. SIMONS CSC has been appointed<br />

dean <strong>of</strong> students aC the <strong>University</strong>, succeeding<br />

REV. A. LEON.ARD COLLINS '38 who<br />

has received a new assignment in New Orleans, La.<br />

Fr. Simons is a specialist in the field <strong>of</strong> educational<br />

psychology'.<br />

Pr<strong>of</strong>. O. TIMOTHY O'MEARA has been appointed<br />

head <strong>of</strong> the <strong>University</strong>'s mathematics<br />

department succeeding Pr<strong>of</strong>. THOMAS E. STEW­<br />

ART *57, recently named associate vice-president<br />

for academic affairs.<br />

R^VYMOND M. BRENNAN <strong>of</strong> Brooklyn recently<br />

joined the law department <strong>of</strong> The Port <strong>of</strong> Nc^v<br />

York Authority and has been assigned to the construction<br />

contracts division.<br />

RICHARD MORRISON has been promoted from<br />

staff member to administrative assistant in the department<br />

<strong>of</strong> pupil personnel <strong>of</strong> the South Bend<br />

school s>-stcm for the coming year. The department<br />

deals with disciplinary and related- student<br />

problems.<br />

RAYMOND F. ROTH JR. has received his master<br />

<strong>of</strong> business administration from Washington U.<br />

in St. Louis at spring commencement.<br />

DAVID P. NOO.V has been awarded a bachelor<br />

<strong>of</strong> laws degree from the Georgetown U. Law Center<br />

in spring commencement ceremonies.<br />

JIM MORSE has joined GEORGE CONNOR '48,<br />

in commenting on the action in pre-season football<br />

games <strong>of</strong> the Chicago Bears pr<strong>of</strong>essional football<br />

team on \VBBM-TV in Chicago. Mone was captain<br />

<strong>of</strong> the 1937 team and played Canadian pr<strong>of</strong>essional<br />

football. He and his wife reside with their sw children<br />

in Muskegon, Mich.<br />

LUKE P. C.-\RR.ABINE has been appointed to<br />

the newly created position <strong>of</strong> assistant superintendent,<br />

electric weld department in the cold processing<br />

division at U. S. SteePs Garv (Ind.) Tube<br />

Works.<br />

It is with regret that we begin this column with<br />

news <strong>of</strong> the death <strong>of</strong> two classmates. Although we<br />

have no details, we ha\*e learned from the Alumni<br />

Office that MARCO V. ASTURIAS and his son <strong>of</strong><br />

Guatemalo, Guatemala, were killed on March 29;<br />

and COiVRAD HUBNER passed away on April 5.<br />
