Tlic Evansville Club met at the Eransvillc Countr>*<br />

Chib for celebration <strong>of</strong> Universal <strong>Notre</strong> <strong>Dame</strong><br />

Night April 27. Special recognition was given to<br />

Marie and JIM McQUAID <strong>of</strong> Vincennes, Ind., for<br />

their faithful attendance at all Chib events.<br />

Other out-<strong>of</strong>-town guests included the JOHN<br />

HENNEBURGERs <strong>of</strong> Mt. Carracl, 111.; the JOHN<br />

HUBERs <strong>of</strong> Henderson, Ky.; and the HOMER<br />

BARTONs <strong>of</strong> Owcnsboro, Ky.<br />

AL HARDING, past secretary, read a humorous<br />

and nostalgic letter about campus personalities and<br />

events that had been written by Pr<strong>of</strong>. Paul Conwav.<br />

Fr. TERRENCE GERKEN OSB, chaplain <strong>of</strong> the<br />

Ex-ansvillc College Newman Club in formation, was<br />

the principal speaker <strong>of</strong> the evening. He cited the<br />

needs for and problems <strong>of</strong> such an organization.<br />

Retiring president Patrick O'DanJcI announced the<br />

new chib <strong>of</strong>ficers for the coming Club year. They<br />

are: JOE HARRISON, president; AL HARDING,<br />

vice-president and treasurer; and DON HALLER,<br />

secretary. A stag party will lead <strong>of</strong>f a long list <strong>of</strong><br />

events scheduled for the coming year.<br />

Fairfield County (Conn.)<br />

<strong>Notre</strong> <strong>Dame</strong> .\lumni <strong>of</strong> Fairfield County, Conn.,<br />

commemorated Universal <strong>Notre</strong> <strong>Dame</strong> Night with a<br />

late afternoon cocktail party at the Red Coach Grill<br />

in Darien on Sunday, .-Xpril 25th.<br />

Our campus representative and guest speaker for<br />

liic program was JIM ARMSTRONG '25, national<br />

alumni secretar\', who gave an enlightening and<br />

entertaining resume <strong>of</strong> the 1965 campus scene. BILL<br />

CUDDY '52 <strong>of</strong> the national alumni board was a<br />

special guest and assisted in our arrangements.<br />

Among those who were in charge <strong>of</strong> preparations<br />

for this affair were: ED BARRETT '56, JOHN<br />

Plans arc now in the works for a smoker and<br />

sports night to be held in late September. This<br />

event will provide an opportunity for an election <strong>of</strong><br />

<strong>of</strong>ficers and the re-organization <strong>of</strong> the Fairfield<br />

County Club. Newcomers to the area who arc interested<br />

in these future developments are asked to<br />

Flint<br />

The Rt. Rev. Msgr. HENRY M. MAYOTTE, a<br />

Roman Catholic priest for 40 years, was honored<br />

Tuesday night as Flint's Man <strong>of</strong> the Year by the<br />

<strong>Notre</strong> <strong>Dame</strong> Club <strong>of</strong> Flint.<br />

He was given a plaque before 170 persons at the<br />

Club's 10th dinner dance at the Flint Golf Club.<br />

Msgr. Mayottc, pastor <strong>of</strong> St. John Vianney<br />

Church, admitted he was told in advance that he<br />

would be presented the "surprise" a^vard.<br />

"I'm surprised it took you so long to bestow it<br />

on me—," he started, and the rest <strong>of</strong> the sentence<br />

was lost in laughter and applause, as he received<br />

the award from the event's co-chairmen, RAY­<br />

MOND J. KELLY JR. and VICTOR E. GEORGE.<br />

He said Kelly and George told him <strong>of</strong> plans for<br />

the award and "in these days <strong>of</strong> emerging laymen,<br />

no one dares to contradict laymen."<br />

Kelly called Msgr. Mayotte "a builder and great<br />

leader, but before being a great leader, he is also<br />

a great priest."<br />

A native <strong>of</strong> Menominee, Msgr. Mayotte grew up in<br />

Detroit, where he was ordained February 15, 1925.<br />

He was assistant at St. Michael Catholic Church<br />

from 1925 to 1928, pastor at St. John's in Davison<br />

from 1928 to 1939 and was then assigned to St.<br />

Agnes as pastor.<br />

• -Ho-succecdcd St. John Vianney's first pastor, the<br />

Rev. William J. Flanagan, in liM4 and ^\'as named<br />

a monsignor in June 1954. Several moths earlier<br />

he had been appointed dean <strong>of</strong> the Flint area<br />

Catholic clergy.<br />

Man <strong>of</strong> the Year since 1954, with the exception <strong>of</strong><br />

This is the centennial year <strong>of</strong> the first science<br />

program at <strong>Notre</strong> <strong>Dame</strong>. LeROY E. SUTTON was<br />

master <strong>of</strong> ceremonies.<br />

The committee for the May 25 Universal <strong>Notre</strong><br />

<strong>Dame</strong> Night 1965, was composed <strong>of</strong>: VIC GEORGE,<br />

DICK CRAMER, BILL MINARDO, R.\Y KELLY,<br />

PAUL HUGHES and FRED M.\NSOUR. Cochairmen<br />

were Vic George and Ray Kelly.<br />

everj'one else arrived. Some <strong>of</strong> those In attendance<br />

were D.VN DOWNEY '44 (winner <strong>of</strong> this year's<br />

low gross golf score), and wife Rosemarv*, Judv and<br />

TO.M -MAUS '57, DON DORINI '53 and wife Jcane,<br />

GEORGE PATTERSON L-'58, another golf trophy<br />

winner this year, Catherine and CHARLIE QUINN<br />

'34 and Jane and BILL MAUS '53.<br />

JIM MOTTSETT '64 is handling the arrangements<br />

for this year's golf outing at the Oak Ridge Country<br />

Club on June 23 and it looks like last ycar'-s trophy<br />

winner BOB BLAIKIE '56, will have a real battle<br />

on his hands keeping It two years in a row.<br />

We are actively looking fonvard to seeing old<br />

friends and classmates at the upcoming <strong>Notre</strong> <strong>Dame</strong>-<br />

Miami game on November 27th. TOM WALKER<br />

'42 and TOM SULLIVAN '48 arc in charge <strong>of</strong><br />

arrangements and will be ably assisted by CHUCK<br />

OLWELL. This year's package will include a buffet<br />

with cocktails at the Governors Club Hotel in Ft.<br />

X^udcrdale, game ticket, and transportation to and<br />

from the Orange Bowl. We are also considering<br />

sending busses from the game to the vtctary dance<br />

at the Shelbumc Hotel in Miami.<br />

If any <strong>of</strong> you alumnt want to see a good game and<br />

enjoy Southern Hospitality, and would like to go<br />

home with a nice tan which will last until Christmas,<br />

come on down.<br />

Tlic Club lield their annual Freshman Send-Off<br />

dinner August 12 at the Governors Club for five<br />

freshmen coming to ND this year from the Ft.<br />

Lauderdale area. The five are Steven M. Gehl,<br />

Joseph P. Kenlry, Richard F. Ott, Michael Trombctta<br />

and Donald A. Wich.<br />

A "mackerel snappers' holiday" was held by the<br />

Club on July 29, when club members fished from 7<br />

to 11 p.m. Thursday evening <strong>of</strong>f a chartered boat<br />

to catch their Friday meals.<br />

Indianapolis<br />

We had our biggest turnout in years for Univcisal<br />

<strong>Notre</strong> <strong>Dame</strong> Night with F-\THER HESBURGH as<br />

our main speaker and guest <strong>of</strong> honor. One <strong>of</strong> the<br />

highlights <strong>of</strong> the evening was the award <strong>of</strong> The<br />

Man <strong>of</strong> The. Year which went to J. ALBERT<br />

SMITH '34. Tlie winner <strong>of</strong> the Club's Scholarship<br />

to <strong>Notre</strong> <strong>Dame</strong> for 1965 was John M. Boyle, a<br />

Cathedral High School graduate whose father is<br />

an ND grad.<br />

New <strong>of</strong>ficers and directors -for 1965-66 were announced<br />

at the dinner and thc>' are as follows:<br />
