V. OVERVIEW OF BALOCHISTAN:<br />
<strong>Balochistan</strong>, province of Pakistan is by far the largest in size and the smallest in<br />
population. The Province is divided into 30 districts. It covers 34.7 million hectares,<br />
almost 44% of the country’s land area, with a population of about 6.6 m 1 illion people<br />
(12 persons per sq. km.). The province is located in South-Western (220N to 320N, 660E<br />
to 700E) Pakistan. About 80% of the area can be classified as inter-mountainous. The<br />
remaining 20% consists of flood plains and coastal plains. The important mountain<br />
ranges are Sulaiman, Toba-Kakar, Central Brahvi, Kirthar, Chagai, Raskoh and central<br />
Makran and Makran coast.<br />
<strong>Balochistan</strong> is divided into 30 districts and it is headed by a Chief Minister who is elected<br />
every five years. The districts are headed by the Deputy Commissioner. There are 11000<br />
schools (1-5), 800 middle schools (6-8), 400 high schools, 73 colleges and 5 universities<br />
in <strong>Balochistan</strong> province. The literacy rate is 26.6% with that of males to females being<br />
36.5% and 15.0% respectively. The districts in the province are:<br />

A. DEMOGRAPHY<br />
As of the 1998 census, <strong>Balochistan</strong> had a population of 6.5 million inhabitants,<br />
representing approximately 5% of the total Pakistan’s population.<br />
