In addition to being recognized as National<br />

Merit Commended <strong>St</strong>udents, Dominic Garcia<br />

received a National Hispanic Honorable<br />

Mention, and Carlton Elder was recognized as a<br />

National Achievement Semi-Finalist. Bryceson<br />

Holcomb and Deshawon Nembhard were also<br />

named Outstanding Participants.<br />

Eighteen seniors were recognized as Semifinalists<br />

in the 2012 competition for National<br />

Merit Scholarships. Congratulations to Chandler<br />

Burke, William Chang, Aarav Chavda, Ryan<br />

Eichenwald, Andrew Graffy, Paul Gudmundsson,<br />

Justin Harvey, Niccolo Lazzara, Mitchell Lee,<br />

Samuel Libby, Parker Matthews, Rajat Mittal,<br />

Rachit Mohan, Arjomaan Mozumder, James<br />

Rowan, Milan Savani, Meyer Thalheimer,<br />

and <strong>St</strong>even Tsai.<br />

YoungArts Finalists Travels to Miami<br />

Painter Robbey Orth ’13 and photographer<br />

Michael Gilliland ’13 were selected as YoungArts<br />

Finalists and traveled to Miami, Florida, for<br />

YoungArts Week. The budding artists were<br />

chosen as finalists from among thousands <strong>of</strong><br />

other students nationwide and were invited to<br />

attend the weeklong event. While there, Michael<br />

received a Silver Award for his photography. Also<br />

recognized were juniors Lance Bock, Cameron<br />

Baxley, and Halbert Bai with Honorable Mention,<br />

and <strong>St</strong>even Tsai ’13 with Merit. YoungArts is the<br />

exclusive nominating organization for selection<br />

<strong>of</strong> the Presidential Scholar in the Arts.<br />

Middle <strong>School</strong> Team Swims to Victory<br />

The Middle <strong>School</strong> Swim Team participated<br />

February 2, 2013, in the Metroplex Middle<br />

<strong>School</strong> Championship Swim Meet, held at the<br />

LISD Aquatic Center in The Colony. The team<br />

finished in first place overall and set three new<br />

meet records.<br />

Swimming as a team, Matthew Yang ’17,<br />

Jacob Hum ’17, Ethan Pittson ’18, and Benjamin<br />

Hurst ’18 set a new meet record in the 200-yard<br />

Freestyle Relay.<br />

Two individual meet records were set by<br />

Jacob Hum ’17 — in the 50-yard Breaststroke<br />

and the 50-yard Butterfly.<br />
