On Campus Photo by Michael Doorey ’13, The ReMarker Cartooning Student Wins National Award Most St. Mark’s teachers discourage students from doodling in class, but Dylan Kirksey ’13 received a national award for “outstanding cartooning.” As The ReMarker’s cartoonist, Dylan serves up three panels of humor with every issue. His vuvuzela-theme strip from the September 23, 2011 issue was awarded first place in the Comic Panel/Strip category in the 2012 Cartooning Awards, presented by the National Scholastic Press Association and Universal Uclick. (above) Will Forbes ’18, selected as a 2013 Sports Illustrated Kids Reporter. Seventh-Grader Named Sports Illustrated Kids Reporter Aspiring sports journalist Will Forbes ’18 has been selected to be a 2013 Sports Illustrated Kids Reporter. Will and the seven other young reporters chosen will have the opportunity to attend sporting events and conduct interviews. Each Kid Reporter will also be given a place on the SI Kid Reporter webpage to post videos and a sports blog, in addition to the chance to be published in Sports Illustrated Kids. Debate Team Finishes Strong St. Mark’s Debate Team members Zach Burdette ’13 and Charlie Marshall ’14 started the year off in fine fashion by finishing second at the prestigious Montgomery Bell Academy Southern Bell Forum debate tournament in Nashville. MBA is smaller but more competitive than many Tier 1 tournaments because they allow each school to bring only its top team. En route to the finals, Burdette and Marshall compiled a 5 –1 record in primary rounds with victories over five other schools from across the nation. Their only preliminary loss was to Pace Academy, which entered the tournament as the first-ranked team in the country. After preliminary competition, Burdette was recognized as the 17th-best speaker and Marshall was recognized as the 25th-best speaker. In elimination rounds, Burdette and Marshall won a series of decisions, defeating Berkeley Prep and Greenhill School, and avenging their preliminary-round loss to Pace Academy. In finals, they were defeated by Stratford Academy, the number-one preseason team that won the first two major tournaments of the year. This was the School’s fifth appearance at the finals of the MBA tournament. St. Mark’s won the tournament in 1989, 1990, 2002, and 2011. National Merit Scholars The National Merit Scholarship Corporation has recognized 29 St. Mark’s seniors as Commended Students, an honor based on PSAT scores and bestowed on only 34,000 students nationwide. 10 On Campus | THE PRIDE St. Mark’s School of Texas
Congratulations to seniors Shivum Agrawal, Alexander Choy, Otto Clark-Martinek, Carlton Elder, Brendan Freeman, Dominic Garcia, Matthew Genecov, Michael Gilliland, Michael Gohlke, Andrew Hall, Daniel Hersh, Harrison Hewitt, Dylan Kirksey, Hansen Kuo, Ryan Miller, Will Moor, Taubert Nadalini, Robbey Orth, Adam Rawot, Raffy Salcedo, Warren Smith, Aditya Sureddi, Brian Vodicka, Henry Woram, Noah Yonack, Will Altabef, Pramukh Atluri, Hunter Book, and Zachary Burdette. In addition to being recognized as National Merit Commended Students, Dominic Garcia received a National Hispanic Honorable Mention, and Carlton Elder was recognized as a National Achievement Semi-Finalist. Bryceson Holcomb and Deshawon Nembhard were also named Outstanding Participants. Eighteen seniors were recognized as Semifinalists in the 2012 competition for National Merit Scholarships. Congratulations to Chandler Burke, William Chang, Aarav Chavda, Ryan Eichenwald, Andrew Graffy, Paul Gudmundsson, Justin Harvey, Niccolo Lazzara, Mitchell Lee, Samuel Libby, Parker Matthews, Rajat Mittal, Rachit Mohan, Arjomaan Mozumder, James Rowan, Milan Savani, Meyer Thalheimer, and Steven Tsai. YoungArts Finalists Travels to Miami Painter Robbey Orth ’13 and photographer Michael Gilliland ’13 were selected as YoungArts Finalists and traveled to Miami, Florida, for YoungArts Week. The budding artists were chosen as finalists from among thousands of other students nationwide and were invited to attend the weeklong event. While there, Michael received a Silver Award for his photography. Also recognized were juniors Lance Bock, Cameron Baxley, and Halbert Bai with Honorable Mention, and Steven Tsai ’13 with Merit. YoungArts is the exclusive nominating organization for selection of the Presidential Scholar in the Arts. Middle School Team Swims to Victory The Middle School Swim Team participated February 2, 2013, in the Metroplex Middle School Championship Swim Meet, held at the LISD Aquatic Center in The Colony. The team finished in first place overall and set three new meet records. Swimming as a team, Matthew Yang ’17, Jacob Hum ’17, Ethan Pittson ’18, and Benjamin Hurst ’18 set a new meet record in the 200-yard Freestyle Relay.
