John Sellars ’89
Weaving history, biology, ethics, and
romance into a page-turning thriller is no easy
task, but John Sellars ’89 has done just that in
his new book The Dark Rift. Though the story is
set in the near future, the plot pulls from the
Spanish conquistadors to the Mayan prophets.
But beyond a stirring narrative, the very presentation
of the book is something unique. Symbols
take the place of character names in dialogue
and ancient maps and symbols dot each page.
John co-wrote the book with Christopher
Haines, whom he met at Dartmouth College.
Jeremy Stewart ’97
Not content with simply making a comfortable
flip-flop, Jeremy Stewart ’97 and business
partner Barrett Horton have created a truly
humanitarian brand with their company, Hari
Mari. Starting with the manufacturing, each
sandal is made with reprocessed rubber and
foam and sustainable hemp fiber, as well as
memory foam for added comfort. Beyond
fighting for the environment, Hari Mari also
fights pediatric cancer, donating $3 from
every sandal sold to help families pay for their
children’s cancer treatment.
Ty Montgomery ’11
Wide receiver Ty Montgomery enjoyed an
outstanding freshman year playing for Stanford.
Playing all 13 games, Montgomery caught
24 passes for 350 yards and two touchdowns,
including a 96-yard return on the final play
of the game at Washington State. He was
awarded the Menlo-Atherton Trophy, given
to the team’s outstanding freshman player.
After his sophomore season at Stanford, Ty
had the opportunity to play in the 2013 Rose
Bowl, where he completed three catches
for 26 yards in the Cardinal victory over
the Wisconsin Badgers.
Conner Youngblood ’08
Musician Conner Youngblood ’08 played to
an audience of millions tuning in to one of television’s
most popular shows. In a recent episode
of Grey’s Anatomy, Conner’s song “Australia”
played as Doctors Meredith Grey and Christina
Yang stayed overnight with their patients in
the hospital. The episode, “Beautiful Doom,”
aired on November 8, 2012, and was seen by
9.26 million viewers, making it the most
watched show in its time slot. “Australia”
appears on Conner’s new album, Sketches pt.1.
