Alumni Meet Financial Aid Challenge In April 2009, the Alumni Financial Aid Challenge was initiated by two graduates as a way to encourage alumni to participate in The Centennial Challenge by making new gifts to support student financial aid. These two donors offered to match dollar-for-dollar all new gifts from alumni for financial aid up to a total of $5 million. The response to this initiative has been simply overwhelming. Alumni from classes as early as the 1930s and as recent as the Class of 2012 have made new commitments in support of the Challenge. In December 2012, it was announced that alumni giving to financial aid had officially surpassed the $5 million goal. The Alumni Financial Aid Challenge was started by Casey McManemin ’79 (and his wife Megan) and Bob Roberts ’64 (and his wife Eveline), who each pledged $2.5 million to establish the Challenge, with an ultimate goal of raising $10 million for the Financial Aid Endowment. These two principal gifts represented the two largest single commitments to financial aid in the School’s history, but more important, they set in motion the opportunity for all alumni to participate in one of the cornerstone priorities of The Centennial Challenge. Features Challenge could demonstrate to the alumni that their gift, every gift, makes a difference, and it makes a difference right now in supporting the School’s mission and its accessibility. I’m really proud of the way our alumni have responded to the Challenge. They’ve responded to the opportunity to make a difference in hundreds and thousands of boys’ lives.” Bob Roberts ’64 added, “St. Mark’s provides the opportunity to challenge yourself and to excel. My St. Mark’s experience enabled me to welcome challenges in business and contributed significantly to my success in life. Eveline and I are pleased that the Alumni Financial Aid Challenge will allow the School to continue to provide these critical opportunities to deserving students.” Eugene McDermott Headmaster Arnie Holtberg remarked, “Ensuring that St. Mark’s is accessible to the boys who will both contribute to our community and benefit from our education is among the School’s highest priorities. This challenge will result in a nearly 25 percent increase in the School’s financial aid resources. Its impact will be felt by every boy who attends this School.” Mr. Holtberg added, “I am deeply grateful to Casey, Megan, Bob, and Eveline for their extraordinary support of and commitment to St. Mark’s. The kind of financial leadership they are providing supports excellence on our campus each and every day.
