Nobel Biocare Ties Up with DCI
India — The Dental Council of India (DCI) has entered into
partnership with Nobel Biocare to establish a Centre of
Dental Excellence in the country. An agreement has been
signed in this regard and a location is being sought in Delhi
or Mumbai for the Centre.
“The objective behind such a move is to constantly educate
the dental fraternity on the latest techniques and
developments in dentistry and simultaneously stressing the
need for maintaining the highest standards in dental
education and ethics,” said Dr Anil Kohli, President of DCI.
According to Dr Kohli, the number of dental colleges has
increased and more than 15,000 students pass out each
year but there is an acute
shortage of teachers with
the result that educational
quality suffers.
“The council had
apprised the central and state governments on this aspect
though nothing has been done to rectify the problem,” he
added.
He also felt the need for a continuing dental education where
dentists should undergo about 20 hours each year. He also
recommended that dentists maintain strict vigilance
concerning infection control and waste management.

Operation Dental Smile in Vietnam a Success
Vietnam — Nearly 5,000 children and young adults in Hue
and Hanoi received free dental check-ups under American
NGO Operation Smile’s 12th annual Dental Mission to
Vietnam recently.
The mission involved more than 30 dental professionals from
US, including oral surgeons, endodontists, pediatric dentists,
general dentists, and students from the University of Maryland.
In Hanoi, it is being held at the Vietnam-Cuba Hospital and
Hanoi Medicine and Pharmacy University, while in Hue,
children received dental care at Operation Smile’s
Comprehensive Care Centre.
The volunteers said they considered the event an opportunity
to share their experiences in dental care with their local
colleagues.
Dr Daniel Taub from Philadelphia, one of the team leaders,
said: “I always glean interesting experiences from
Vietnamese experts during my missions to Vietnam. This is
the 13th time I am coming to the country. It recognise many
things have improved.”
Every person screened at the clinics is given a toothbrush
and toothpaste, and told about the importance of oral
hygiene. DA
W&H Dental-Mechanik (Asia) Officially Opens
Singapore — W&H Dental-
Mechanik (Asia) was officially
opened by, Mr Peter Malata, W&H
Dentalwerk President, amid much
fanfare. In his speech, Mr Malata
outlined the importance of the new
service center in Singapore and
that it will play a major role in the
future by holding workshops as
well. The service center offers
W&H premium services for the
Asia-Pacific region.

The center is currently
managed by Mr Stephan
Rauchenzauner, the technical
services manager, and
reporting to Mr Martin Rolfe,
the Area Manager for Asia-
Pacific region. The new
service center will also be
actively be looking for suitable
candidates to fill the positions
available during the next few
