T O W N O F S O U T H W I N D S O R www.southwindsor.org P O L I C E S E R V I C E S assistance of our VIPs and the community at large, the 4th Annual South Windsor DARE Golf Tournament was sold out for the first time ever, raising over $12,000 for DARE and other community involvement programs. In September 2000, after nearly seven years of dedicated service Maco, our Department Canine, a search and rescue and drug-sniffing dog, retired. Unfortunately, due to a rapidly spreading form of cancer, Maco passed away several weeks later. The Department was, however, able to find and train a new canine team, and in December 2000, Officer Ronald Littell, Jr. and Bojar graduated from the Connecticut State Police Academy with high honors. Other community programs such as the Neighborhood Block Watch, the McGruff House, and the Citizen Observer Program continue to provide benefits to the citizens and community members of South Windsor. The Police And Community Together (P.A.C.T.) Citizens’ Police Academy entered its 5th year of educating residents and business community members on the practices of the South Windsor Police Services. This year we also started a Volunteers In Policing (VIP) Program, utilizing the support that has always been offered by PACT Academy Alumni. The VIPs will assist the Department with a variety of tasks, including administrative and record keeping work, as well as volunteer help at functions such as our Annual DARE Golf Tournament and Car Seat Clinics. With the In Fiscal Year 2000, the Police Department’s Records Department saw significant changes as well. After over 26 years of service to the Town and the Police Department, Marge Aregood retired, and Sandra Jacques, a 13 year veteran, relocated to New Hampshire. Hired to replace these two dedicated employees were Angela Gioiella and Christine Meyerhans. Christine, already a full-time dispatcher with the Department, transitioned into the Criminal Records Clerk position, while Angela joined the Department as a new employee in January 2000. Other vacancies due to attrition were filled by Gary Rossignol, full-time dispatcher, and Scott Madore and Tina Roy, both as Police Officers. In August of 2000, the Police Department in conjunction with the South Windsor Board of Education, added another officer to the Town’s School Resource Officer Program. Officer Andrew Klopfer assumed the duties in the Timothy Edwards Middle School, while Officer Elsie Diaz remained at South Windsor High School. The two officers counsel individual students, speak on law and safety topics, and handle any police concerns on school grounds. In 2000, the South Windsor Police Department expanded its cooperation and work with other area Police Agencies. This regional approach has allowed all involved agencies to capitalize on the efficiencies of shared resources and improved purchasing power. www.southwindsor.org T O W N O F S O U T H W I N D S O R P O L I C E S E R V I C E S agreements, the Police Department is eligible for state and federal funding which is not otherwise available to individual agencies. In May 2001, the long-planned Computer Aided Dispatch (CAD) program was implemented in conjunction with the towns of Newington and Manchester. Also during the fiscal year, the Capital Region Emergency Services Team (CREST) was formed in cooperation with Manchester, Wethersfield, Vernon, and Glastonbury. The Team is made up of specially trained officers used to assist member communities in the response to critical incidents. South Windsor also joined with Hartford, Wethersfield, Glastonbury, Manchester and Rocky Hill to form the CREST Dive Team. This team performs water related special search and recovery duties and associated criminal investigations. The fourth cooperative effort undertaken during Fiscal Year 2000 was the formation of the an eight-town Metro Traffic Services Unit. The Metro Traffic Services Unit allows for shared resources in all aspects of traffic services in order to reduce the number of traffic related deaths and injuries and to increase the use of passenger restraint systems and child safety seats. As part of this effort, the South Windsor Police Department was able to obtain a specially equipped Police motorcycle. South Windsor Police Services is a customer driven, service oriented organization. Our customer service survey results of 99% favorable indicate we are meeting the needs of the community. Our personnel are among the best in the state. We will continue to strive for the most professional standards of conduct and performance. Your continued involvement and feedback will guide us along the path to excellence as we continue to face the many challenges of our ever-changing world. Law enforcement is everybody’s business.
