T O W N O F S O U T H W I N D S O R www.southwindsor.org R E C R E A T I O N D E P A R T M E N T RECREATION AREAS • Nevers Road Park: Located on the corner of Sand Hill and Nevers Road. Facilities include the Community Center, Rotary Pavilion complete with kitchen and restrooms (available for rent), exercise trail, hiking trails, softball area, 2 baseball fields, horseshoe pits, sand volleyball court and 3 regulation, and 2 junior soccer fields • Rotary Hill: (Pudim Property) Access from Barber Hill Road and Niederwerfer Road. Facilities include a hill for sliding, cross country skiing and a wildlife sanctuary with marked trails. • Rye Street Park: Located on Rye Street. Facilities include: 2 softball fields with lights, playground, picnic areas, 4 tennis courts, basketball court, and seasonal ice skating. • Veterans Memorial Park: Located on Pleasant Valley Road, west of the intersection with Ellington Road. Facilities include: a 1.6 million gallon swimming pool, picnic tables, grills, playground, pavilion with concession stand and showers, basketball court and open play field (seasonal). www.southwindsor.org T O W N O F S O U T H W I N D S O R P A R K A N D R E C R E A T I O N C O M M I S S I O N This has been an exciting and productive year for the Park and Recreation Commission as we continued to lay the groundwork for the future of the parks and recreational facilities in South Windsor. Utilizing the $30,000 appropriation from the Town Council, the Commission has spent much of 2000 creating and developing a Master Plan of Park Design and Development. The Master Plan Subcommittee, along with the consulting firm of Vollmer Associates presented the exciting and comprehensive final draft of the plan to the Town Council in March of 2001. We are happy to report that the Council approved and adopted our Master Plan. In the coming year, we look forward to keeping the Master Plan a vital, active document. In addition to continually working for the implementation of the Plan, we will remain vigilant for ways to improve it as the ever changing needs of the town evolve. In addition to completing the Master Plan, we continued the traditional role of the commission, in conjunction with the Recreation Department, of sponsoring and providing volunteers for the annual Holiday Lights Contest, the Easter Egg Hunt, the Turkey Shoot, and the Hartford Marathon. The Park and Recreation Commission is an appointed body of seven regular members and two alternates. The commission advises Town Council on the active and passive recreational needs of the Town. Regular meetings are held in the Sprenkle Room in Town Hall on the second Wednesday of every month. Public participation is always welcome. VINEY WILSON, CHAIRPERSON D A T A P R O C E S S I N G During Fiscal Year 2000/2001, the Town of South Windsor has continued to improve its web site and update various systems throughout the town. The web site continues to grow and provide more information and interactive features. We have added the service of Virtual Town Hall to our site. This allows the Town’s Departments to add information, such as calendar entries, agendas and meeting minutes, press releases and more in timely manner. Virtual Town Hall also offers a subscription feature where agendas, press releases and legal notices will be mailed directly to subscribers e-mail accounts. This subscription service at no cost. We upgraded the dog license software for the Town Clerk. This will speed up license transactions. It also improves tracking of the license records, including renewal and delinquent records. We continue to explore available software and hardware solutions to better serve the Town’s ever changing needs. This includes upgrading and replacing existing hardware and software.We have also added an additional staff member to our department. We welcome John Marchesseault aboard. John comes to us from the Police Department, where he helped create our original web site. His many years of service there makes him familiar with the Town staff and our existing needs. His addition will help us better meet those needs. In addition to “regular” department functions he will provide Town staff with support services as well as maintain our web site. We look forward to continued growth of our site at www.southwindsor.org, as well as the on going challenges, which are ever present, as we update and upgrade our systems.
