OUTCOME 3: COMMUNITY AWARENESS<br />

The community will increase its awareness of tuart <strong>and</strong> its<br />

ecosystems, <strong>and</strong> their benefits to humankind. This awareness<br />

21. By Q2 2007 liaison with the<br />

Western Australia Department of<br />

Education <strong>and</strong> Training has resulted<br />

in tuart conservation <strong>and</strong><br />

management strategies being<br />

incorporated into relevant school<br />

projects.<br />

22. By Q4 2005 designated<br />

Government agencies have linked<br />

websites to provide information on<br />

tuart vegetation species <strong>and</strong><br />

communities, mapping, regional <strong>and</strong><br />

local planning, research, <strong>and</strong> notes<br />

for conservation <strong>and</strong> management on<br />

private l<strong>and</strong>.<br />

23. By Q1 2007 a program is<br />

established to assist l<strong>and</strong>owners to<br />

do creditable <strong>and</strong> practical<br />

biodiversity surveys.<br />

• Government agencies supported by the Geographical<br />

Association of Western Australia, to liaise with primary<br />

<strong>and</strong> secondary school curriculum developers to ensure<br />

tuart conservation <strong>and</strong> management principles, values<br />

<strong>and</strong> issues are addressed in general education.<br />

• Introduce programs to encourage school participation in<br />

tuart conservation <strong>and</strong> management initiatives.<br />

• Improve coordination of tuart information provided by<br />

Government agencies.<br />

• Improve the provision of natural resource material on<br />

tuart to l<strong>and</strong> managers, developers <strong>and</strong> community<br />

groups involved in Natural Resource <strong>Management</strong>.<br />

• Develop guidelines for biological <strong>and</strong> biodiversity<br />

inventories principles, objectives, st<strong>and</strong>ards, <strong>and</strong> data<br />

capture methods.<br />

• Develop mechanisms for the transfer of biological <strong>and</strong><br />

biodiversity inventory data to central CALM databases.<br />

24. By Q1 2008 a report is<br />

commissioned by Government that<br />

makes recommendations for<br />

including into the curricula of tertiary<br />

education, the role of healthy tuart<br />

ecosystems <strong>and</strong> sustainable l<strong>and</strong><br />

management.<br />

• Provide for the dissemination of interpreted inventory<br />

data through the WALIS Atlas website.<br />

• Ensure strategic policy <strong>and</strong> technical issues are<br />

addressed in relevant professional courses, particularly<br />

forestry, Natural Resource <strong>Management</strong>, geography,<br />

agriculture, biology <strong>and</strong> town planning.<br />
