The polycentric joint has five axes that are arranged to form a ring. The anterior axis chain is designed like a conventional four-axis joint, but the posterior linkage bar is interrupted by an additional pivot point (Fig. 1). In this way, the patented design allows for two different modes of operation: the swing phase mode and the stance phase flexion mode. Two specially configured miniature hydraulic units (Fig. 2, a+b) control the two modes. Outstanding performance during the stance phase is the key feature of the 3R60. The EBS pro Knee Joint uses this proven technology as a basis. The spring and hydraulics combination in the stance phase flexion mode is individually adjustable and can be precisely adapted to suit the requirements of the prosthesis wearer. Thanks to the progressivity of the EBS resistance – realised with an autoadaptive EBS unit – for the first time, the effectiveness can adapt itself over a large range of walking speeds. Flexion is progressively limited with increasing walking speed. As the walking speed decreases, less damping resistance takes effect ensuring more stance phase flexion (Fig. 3). In this way, this important function adapts to different everyday situations. For the prosthesis wearer, this means increased safety and comfort, as well as a highly natural gait pattern. The advantages of stance phase fl exion at a glance • The patented design allows controlled stance phase flexion of up to 15° and thus comfortable walking with high safety even on uneven ground and on inclines of up to 10°. • The progressive damping of stance phase flexion as well as stance phase extension provides for harmonious, natural movements while bearing weight. • Possible for the first time: adaptation of stance phase flexion to different everyday situations. • The EBS pro function provides stress reduction for both extremities. In addition, it provides reduction of the forces acting upon the residual limb, pelvis, and spine, as well as close approximation to a sound, natural gait pattern. • The 5-axis design provides greater protection in high-risk situations: the wearer can always flex the joint in controlled manner without delay or prior full extension, so there is less risk of falling than with geometrically locking knee joints.
