3.3 Urban fabric
1. Traditional historical urban fabric in flat areas, made up of individual plots (houses and
private gardens) and regular streets on a grid network.
2. A few scattered high buildings, monuments or modern buildings or some residential
blocks of flats grouped together in a neighbourhood, such as in Microrayan area.
3. Informal settlements either expanding around the city or climbing the various hills inside
the city “….the city has a population of more than 3.5 million, with impoverished
residents filling war-devastated sections of the city and constructing new dwellings
higher and higher on the surrounding hillsides” 5 .
