Method of Testing<br />
1. Check that the ignition switch can be switched off.<br />
2. Check that the ignition key can be removed.<br />
3. Check for wiring that could interfere with the driver’s control of the vehicle.<br />
4. Check electrical wiring to the extent possible without dismantling for condition, security and position.<br />
5. Check that any after-market items fitted such as a mobile phone charger, radio etc. cannot be operated while the ignition<br />
switch is in the off position and the key removed from the switch.<br />
6. Check (where practical) that the wiring used in after-market fitments appears suitable.<br />
7. Check the battery for security and leaks.<br />

REASONS FOR FAILURE<br />
1 Ignition switch missing.<br />
2 Ignition cannot be switched off.<br />
3 Ignition key cannot be removed.<br />
4 Wiring liable to interfere with the driver’s control of the vehicle.<br />
5 Risk of fire including risk associated with:<br />
(a) electrical wiring dislocated or insecure.<br />
(b) electrical wiring insulation damaged.<br />
(c) after-market items other than taxi roof signs, antitheft<br />
systems and light failure indicators not wired<br />
through the ignition switch or a fuse.<br />
(d) use of unsuitable wiring e.g. household wiring/ bell wiring.<br />
6 Mounting unsatisfactory.<br />
7 Risk of short-circuiting.<br />
8 Leakages.<br />
NOTE: A number of fatal fires in cars have been attributed<br />
to faulty wiring. Testers are asked to be particularly diligent<br />
when examining wiring that could result in a vehicle fire.<br />
