EXHAUST SYSTEM/NOISE<br />

NATIONAL CAR TEST (<strong>NCT</strong>) MANUAL <strong>2010</strong><br />

Method of Testing<br />

1. Examine the condition of the exhaust pipe and silencer for security and leaks.<br />

2. Assess the effectiveness of the silencer in reducing, as far as is reasonable, the noise caused by the exhaust from the engine.<br />

3. See note below. If testing is required, the following procedure must be followed:<br />

NOTES<br />

1. If the <strong>NCT</strong> vehicle inspector deems that the level of noise caused by the vehicle exhaust is excessive, the<br />

specific level of noise is to be measured. The vehicle must be moved to the sound test area. The vehicle<br />

will be required to have a level of noise less than 99dB(A) in order to pass the test.<br />

1 Badly mounted or liable to fall off.<br />

2 Missing or not functioning.<br />

4 Serious leaks.<br />

5 Vehicle exhaust noise has reached or exceeded<br />

a specified level of 99dB(A).<br />

6 Possibility of fire being caused by leaks or broken components.<br />
