Giving the
city a short
back and
sides
Perhaps it’s a bit like having a
regular hair cut to look nice and
tidy, but there’s no doubt that giving
Playford’s street verges a regular
mow makes a big difference to the
way everyone appreciates our city.
That’s made clear by Playford
Council’s customer satisfaction
research, which consistently
shows that the appearance of the
city is of great importance to its
residents.
As a result, one of the key priorities
of the 2011/12 Council Plan is to
continue to improve the appearance
of the city and funds have been
allocated for increased road and
footpath maintenance and additional
verge mowing, as well as for
graffiti removal and litter prevention
programs.
Playford’s urban verges will be cut
an additional two times per year,
taking it to at least five cuts in total.
“We’ve already made a difference
to the look of the city,” says
Greg Wegund, Team Manager
Open Space. His team has been
expanded with a new crew and plant
equipment to be received within the
coming months for implementation
of the new mowing program.
“The guys are keen and
enthusiastic, really motivated to
improve the look of the city,” Greg
says. “Having a whole extra crew
will definitely make a difference.”
Residents can also make a
difference by upgrading their
verge area, including planting new
vegetation – but before doing so
they must seek Council approval.
The verge area might look simple
enough but there are things like
water, sewer and gas mains,
underground cables and drainage to
consider.
Verge landscaping application
forms are available from Council,
along with guidelines that include
the most appropriate trees and
shrubs. Note also that residents are
then responsible for the ongoing
maintenance of the verge.
