The people who receive systemic family therapy obta<strong>in</strong> an improvement respect to readmissions,<br />

relapses and treatment adherence; however, this improvement is not ma<strong>in</strong>ta<strong>in</strong>ed<br />

after 2 years’ follow-up 87 .<br />

When the person affected by the disease is <strong>in</strong>cluded <strong>in</strong> family <strong>in</strong>terventions the relapse<br />

levels drop 8 .<br />

Family <strong>in</strong>terventions comb<strong>in</strong>ed with other <strong>in</strong>terventions<br />

Comb<strong>in</strong>ed psychosocial treatment produces improvements of 40% <strong>in</strong> the evaluation of<br />

the cl<strong>in</strong>ical severity, social function<strong>in</strong>g and stress perceived by the caregiver <strong>in</strong> the 24<br />

month evaluation 89 .<br />

Comb<strong>in</strong>ed psychosocial treatment achieves 25% more cases of complete recovery <strong>in</strong> a 24<br />

month period 89 .<br />

In 25% of the cases of recent-onset schizophrenia (10 years) the comb<strong>in</strong>ed psychosocial treatment applied <strong>for</strong> 24 months<br />

does not achieve any type of improvement 89 .<br />

Psychoeducational type family therapy together with SST and pharmacological treatment<br />

<strong>in</strong> people with schizophrenia who come from homes with high expressed emotion did not<br />

present any relapse <strong>in</strong> 12 months 76 .<br />

Respect to the degree of treatment adherence, lower percentages of relapses are<br />

observed <strong>in</strong> the psychoeducational type family <strong>in</strong>tervention group 76 .<br />

Two years after the treatment, ma<strong>in</strong>tenance of the effect of the family therapy is observed<br />

when prevent<strong>in</strong>g relapses but the SST effect is not ma<strong>in</strong>ta<strong>in</strong>ed, observ<strong>in</strong>g similar percentages<br />

to those of the control group 90 .<br />

With respect to pharmacological treatment adherence, failure to comply with the medication<br />

was less frequent <strong>in</strong> the experimental groups than <strong>in</strong> the control group (21% and 40%<br />

respectively) 90 .<br />

Comb<strong>in</strong>ed psychosocial <strong>in</strong>tervention of patients and family members achieves greater<br />

cl<strong>in</strong>ical improvements than the control group, and this effect is ma<strong>in</strong>ta<strong>in</strong>ed <strong>for</strong> 4 years 91 .<br />

After 4 years’ follow-up, the cl<strong>in</strong>ical state and the social function<strong>in</strong>g of the people who<br />

followed a comb<strong>in</strong>ed psychosocial <strong>in</strong>tervention were similar to the control group, but<br />

they achieved 40% less relapses 91 .<br />

People with SMI and a diagnosis of bipolar disorder<br />

No differences have been found between family psychosocial <strong>in</strong>tervention and <strong>in</strong>dividual<br />

1- <strong>in</strong>tervention with respect to relapses, readmissions and treatment adherence at the end of<br />

the treatment (12 months) 98 .<br />

There is an improvement with respect to treatment adherence <strong>in</strong> people who have received<br />

family <strong>in</strong>tervention compared with those who received crisis <strong>in</strong>tervention. 99<br />

Family <strong>in</strong>tervention favours the remission of symptoms after 3 and 15 months of the <strong>in</strong>tervention,<br />

compared with crisis <strong>in</strong>tervention. 94<br />

Patients whose family members followed a group psychoeducational programme presented<br />

a significantly longer period of time until any hypomaniac or maniac type recurrence<br />

than those of the control group and they presented fewer relapses after 12 months’<br />

follow-up 103 .<br />
