ESD UPCOMING EVENTS Materials for a Sustainable Automotive Future Monday, May 11, 2009 Learn about the unique and fascinating challenges facing materials engineers in the development of the Car of the Future. Dr. Alan I. Taub, Executive Director, General Motors Research, will discuss the industry’s take on this field’s demanding innovation. This event takes place at The Gazebo in Warren, Mich. ESD Institute Clean Water Symposium May 19–20, 2009 The Engineering Society of Detroit Institute’s invitationonly Clean Water Symposium will be held at ESD Headquarters on May 19–20. The ESD Institute implements innovation by connecting differing backgrounds, opinions and expertise into a process environment fostering creative and independent thought to deliver focused and consensus-based actions that can be adopted by policymakers in the private and public sectors around the world. Free Third Thursday Networking Event The third thursday of every month Take advantage of this opportunity to network with engineers and business leaders throughout Southeast Michigan. Introduction to Sustainable Construction Beginning June 10 Sustainable construction is becoming a sought-after profession. Whether you are a construction pro or someone who wants/needs to learn more about sustainable and green building without all the technical jargon, you should attend this course. Taught by two highly respected college professors, the course will cover several topics, including: •• History and background of the movement toward sustainable construction •• Working lexicon of terms and the language of sustainability •• Principles and practices of Total Quality Management (TQM) and its importance to the movement •• Principles and practices of Alternative Dispute Resolution (ADR) and its value to the construction community •• Ethical obligations we face in a global construction and development environment •• Impact of green/sustainable building practices on the traditional construction/design business •• Challenges of introducing and implementing sustainable construction practices •• LEED certification process for those participants who would like to become LEED-accredited professionals through the U.S. Green Building Council (USGBC) and other professional development opportunities through ASHRAE, etc. This is a 300/400 level course. CEU and PDU credits will be available for course completion. ESD is proud to be part of this tradition again this year and you’re invited to join us. Don’t miss a spectacular breakfast at Sinbad’s Restaurant while listening to race drivers talk about what it’s like to operate powerful boats, ranging from 39 to 44 ft in length and powered by automotive or turbine engines up to 3,700 horsepower. Following the breakfast, you will receive free passes to tour the race pit and vintage boat areas as competitors prepare to qualify for the 2009 Gold Cup Race on the Detroit River.
