Lawrence Technological University
(LTU) has been recognized by
the Carnegie Foundation for the
Advancement of Teaching. The
award recognizes the university’s
expanding community engagements
and outreach efforts. LTU is the only
technological university in Michigan
to receive the distinguished award
in both curricular engagement and
outreach and partnerships.
Walbridge has won the Prime
Contractor Safety Award from
the U.S. Army Corporation of
Engineers Savannah District for
work on Fort Benning Special Ops
Forces Regimental Headquarters
building. The engineering firm has
been recognized for its execution of
an extremely safe program on the
construction site.
Michigan State University and
Sparrow Hospital have signed an
agreement to improve mid-Michigan’s
health care by expanding research,
medical education, and clinical
services. Sparrow Hospital CEO and
President Dennis Swan and Michigan
State’s President Lou Anna K. Simon
were present to solidify the agreement
between the two institutions.
Oakland University has launched
the Nanotech R&D Institute, led by
T.C. Yih, PhD, PE, Vice President
for Research and Executive
Director of the institute. Dr. Yih is
committed to making the institute
a leader in discovering and
researching new breakthroughs in
nanotechnology. “Almost anything
you find in your research now, no
one has found it before,” Yih noted.
The American Institute of Architects
Michigan has appointed
Kim Fricke-Young of Professional
Concepts Insurance Agency, Inc.
(Brighton) to the newly created
position of Professional Affiliate
Advisor. Since 1985, Ms. Fricke-Young
has provided advice and served as
a resource to many of Michigan’s
top architectural, engineering,
accounting, and law firms.
The Michigan Economic Development
Corporation (MEDC)
has selected D. Gregory Main
to replace James Epolito as
President and CEO of the state’s
central investment attraction and
job creation organization. Mr.
Main, until recently, was CEO
and President of i2E INC, one of
the nation’s leading technology
commercialization organizations in
Oklahoma City. Mr. Main, who grew
up in Lansing, has a long record
of leadership in new technology
ventures and economic development.
He was a general partner
with Chisholm Private Capital
Partners, a $66-million venture
capital firm, in Oklahoma City and
a partner in Intersouth Partners of
Research Triangle, N.C. Mr. Epolito
became President of Delta Dental of
Michigan in early April.
Henry Ford West Bloomfield
Hospital, the new $360 million
hospital, opened on March 15.
This will be the seventh hospital
in the Henry Ford health care
network; it will create over 1,200
jobs in Michigan. Of the 300 private
rooms, 191 are now open, with the
remainder to open in 2011.
The first SciEngiSaturday held in January was a success as more than 30 kids learned all about the
fascinating world of forensic science. Hands-on activities organized by the Ann Arbor Hands-on
Museum got kids engaged and excited about high-tech crime solving. More SciEngiSaturdays are
planned in the near future.
