Maintenance
The Marley rainwater harvesting system is designed for minimal
maintenance, requiring only periodic cleaning of the silt trap and
the filter unit within the central riser. The USW200 is also fitted
with an in-line filter.
The cleaning frequency required to maintain efficient operation of
the system will be dependent on specific installation factors such
as type of roof material used for the collecting surfaces and the
proximity of any trees, but generally it is recommended that the
inspection covers are lifted every 4-6 weeks to carry out visual checks.
a) Silt Trap
Remove the inspection cover screws and remove any large
particles of debris from the trap. If required, the leaf guard can
be pulled clear of the unit to check for build up of debris around
the outlet. Ensure the guard is replaced over the outlet
afterwards. If the level of collected sediment is within
approximately 100mm of the invert of the outlet, use a small
container to remove it before replacing and securing the cover
b) Water Filter
Both systems incorporate a 30 day reminder timer within the
controls to advise when the filter needs to be checked. This can
be reset by pressing the right hand button. The frequency with
which the filter needs to be checked and cleaned will depend on
the specific installation conditions and, to a certain extent, the
time of year. To access the water filter unit, unscrew and remove
the inspection cover from the inlet chamber. (Refer to
‘Operational safety’ on back page).
i.Reach down into the chamber and pull the flexible hose elbow
from the top of the filter housing, taking care to ensure that any
collected debris in the hose does not fall into the water
ii.Release the filter housing outlet from its connection by pulling the
housing upwards then withdrawing it with the outlet uppermost.
iii.Remove the filter housing cover by unscrewing the two screw
fixings and flush out any collected debris from the filter drum
with a hose. If there is any fine sediment in the base of the
housing the drum can be removed by releasing the base screw.
iv.If the drum is removed, ensure that the fixing bar is aligned
with the centreline of the outlet when it is replaced.
When replacing the filter unit ensure that the outlet is correctly
located in the inlet chamber and that the two support legs are
firmly seated across the well.
c) In-line filter
Before commencing, ensure that the power supply to the controls
is isolated and that the isolation valve is closed. To clean the filter
mesh, loosen the nut on the body, unscrew the housing, remove
the filter and flush under a tap.
Operational safety
Although it is inevitable that collected rainwater in the storage tank
will contain a small amount of bacterial matter, under normal
circumstances this will not present a problem. It is however advisable
to observe the following precautions when using the system.
•Do not allow excessive amounts of debris to build up in the silt
trap and main filter. Even if the system appears to be
functioning, the maintenance checks detailed in this manual
should always be carried out on a regular basis.
•Do not allow the water to be used for drinking purposes.
•Always disconnect and drain down any garden hoses connected
to the system after use. Wherever possible, store hoses away
from any heat sources such as direct sunlight.
•In normal use the inspection cover to the well must be kept
secured with the three fixing screws fully tightened. Access
should only be required when carrying out periodic
maintenance on the filter unit.
•Whenever the cover is removed for inspection or filter cleaning,
the well must not be left unattended. In particular, children
should be kept away from the area.
•Always isolate the power supply when carrying out any
maintenance work on the system.
•If the mains supply cable becomes damaged during use it must
be replaced by a qualified electrician.
•If the supply cable to the pump becomes damaged during use,
the pump must be replaced.
