Maintenance<br />

The <strong>Marley</strong> rainwater harvesting system is designed for minimal<br />

maintenance, requiring only periodic cleaning of the silt trap and<br />

the filter unit within the central riser. The USW200 is also fitted<br />

with an in-line filter.<br />

The cleaning frequency required to maintain efficient operation of<br />

the system will be dependent on specific installation factors such<br />

as type of roof material used for the <strong>co</strong>llecting surfaces and the<br />

proximity of any trees, but generally it is re<strong>co</strong>mmended that the<br />

inspection <strong>co</strong>vers are lifted every 4-6 weeks to carry out visual checks.<br />

a) Silt Trap<br />

Remove the inspection <strong>co</strong>ver screws and remove any large<br />

particles of debris from the trap. If required, the leaf guard can<br />

be pulled clear of the unit to check for build up of debris around<br />

the outlet. Ensure the guard is replaced over the outlet<br />

afterwards. If the level of <strong>co</strong>llected sediment is within<br />

approximately 100mm of the invert of the outlet, use a small<br />

<strong>co</strong>ntainer to remove it before replacing and securing the <strong>co</strong>ver<br />

b) Water Filter<br />

Both systems in<strong>co</strong>rporate a 30 day reminder timer within the<br />

<strong>co</strong>ntrols to advise when the filter needs to be checked. This can<br />

be reset by pressing the right hand button. The frequency with<br />

which the filter needs to be checked and cleaned will depend on<br />

the specific installation <strong>co</strong>nditions and, to a certain extent, the<br />

time of year. To access the water filter unit, unscrew and remove<br />

the inspection <strong>co</strong>ver from the inlet chamber. (Refer to<br />

‘Operational safety’ on back page).<br />

i.Reach down into the chamber and pull the flexible hose elbow<br />

from the top of the filter housing, taking care to ensure that any<br />

<strong>co</strong>llected debris in the hose does not fall into the water<br />

ii.Release the filter housing outlet from its <strong>co</strong>nnection by pulling the<br />

housing upwards then withdrawing it with the outlet uppermost.<br />

iii.Remove the filter housing <strong>co</strong>ver by unscrewing the two screw<br />

fixings and flush out any <strong>co</strong>llected debris from the filter drum<br />

with a hose. If there is any fine sediment in the base of the<br />

housing the drum can be removed by releasing the base screw.<br />

iv.If the drum is removed, ensure that the fixing bar is aligned<br />

with the centreline of the outlet when it is replaced.<br />

When replacing the filter unit ensure that the outlet is <strong>co</strong>rrectly<br />

located in the inlet chamber and that the two support legs are<br />

firmly seated across the well.<br />

c) In-line filter<br />

Before <strong>co</strong>mmencing, ensure that the power supply to the <strong>co</strong>ntrols<br />

is isolated and that the isolation valve is closed. To clean the filter<br />

mesh, loosen the nut on the body, unscrew the housing, remove<br />

the filter and flush under a tap.<br />

Operational safety<br />

Although it is inevitable that <strong>co</strong>llected rainwater in the storage tank<br />

will <strong>co</strong>ntain a small amount of bacterial matter, under normal<br />

circumstances this will not present a problem. It is however advisable<br />

to observe the following precautions when using the system.<br />

•Do not allow excessive amounts of debris to build up in the silt<br />

trap and main filter. Even if the system appears to be<br />

functioning, the maintenance checks detailed in this manual<br />

should always be carried out on a regular basis.<br />

•Do not allow the water to be used for drinking purposes.<br />

•Always dis<strong>co</strong>nnect and drain down any garden hoses <strong>co</strong>nnected<br />

to the system after use. Wherever possible, store hoses away<br />

from any heat sources such as direct sunlight.<br />

•In normal use the inspection <strong>co</strong>ver to the well must be kept<br />

secured with the three fixing screws fully tightened. Access<br />

should only be required when carrying out periodic<br />

maintenance on the filter unit.<br />

•Whenever the <strong>co</strong>ver is removed for inspection or filter cleaning,<br />

the well must not be left unattended. In particular, children<br />

should be kept away from the area.<br />

•Always isolate the power supply when carrying out any<br />

maintenance work on the system.<br />

•If the mains supply cable be<strong>co</strong>mes damaged during use it must<br />

be replaced by a qualified electrician.<br />

•If the supply cable to the pump be<strong>co</strong>mes damaged during use,<br />

the pump must be replaced.<br />
