Frankfurt has been an international trading
centre for over 800 years. Its location in the
heart of Europe has played a major role in
this development. Today, Messe Frankfurt
(Frankfurt Fair & Exhibition Centre) hosts
some 40 international trade shows every
year, providing 355,678 square metres of
floor space. The trade fairs on show attract
hundreds of thousands of visitors from across
the globe. The Frankfurt Book Fair, for example,
is the leading event of the international
publishing industry and a forum for the literary
world. It is also a premier cultural event,
one that focuses on a different theme country
every year. Car enthusiasts, meanwhile, prefer
the International Motor Show (IAA), taking
place in Frankfurt every two years. Germany’s

on the fairgrounds is the Festhalle, or
Festival Hall. Erected over a century ago, this
beautiful domed construction plays a key
role in Frankfurt’s cultural landscape. Diverse
