Carthage Area Hospital
expansion almost finished
CARTHAGE — Over the past
year, Carthage Area Hospital
governance, physicians and
staff nearly finalized their
building expansion and renovation
project; installed a new
management information system;
and enhanced needed
healthcare services to outlying
and underserved communities.
In September, the hospital
completed phase two of its $10
million building project, which
included a new surgical center,
birthing center, lobby, accounting
suites and major upgrades
in clinical equipment. It also
added a much-needed parking
lot, improved landscaping and
upgraded exterior and interior
signage.
The new birthing center features
large private family
birthing rooms, wireless Internet,
Jacuzzi tubs, plasma televisions,
secured entrances and a
private family environment. It
offers 24-hour epidural services
and a new delivery room for C-
Sections. Military families are
served through Tricare Insurance.
Phase three of the building
project will be complete in early
March and includes a new stateof-the-art
open MRI;
coronary/intensive care unit;
laboratory; pulmonary function
lab and needed interior renovations.
The hospital will be
adding lithotripsy services
soon, assuming final approval
of the state Department of
Health. The hospital isupgrading
technology within the new
laboratory department so that
testing is completed faster and
in-house.
This past year the hospial has
been able to expand the Community
Partners Primary Care
Network. Examples of this
would be the opening of the
fourth school based health center,
which is located at the
Beaver River Central School. In
September of this year officials
are planning on opening other
school based health centers for
the LaFargeville Central School
and Carthage Elementary
School. Through these centers
the hospital is able to partner
with the respective school district
in providing needed and
ongoing primary health care to
the underserved and under-insured
children within these
communities.
Several months ago,
Carthage Area Hospital opened
its first satellite dental clinic at
Star Lake, on the campus of
Clifton-Fine Hospital and
known as the Ken Reil Memorial
Dental Clinic. The hospital also
provides a school based dental
clinic at Edwards-Knox Central
School.
The CAH behavioral health
center is completing its first year
of operation.
The need for mental health
services is enormous and the
hospital is attempting to add
needed providers during the
coming months.
Through collaborative efforts
with community leaders, the
hospital continues to enhance
and integrate the various community
primary care centers
now in Adams, Sackets Harbor,
Evans Mills, Cape Vincent, Harrisville
and Carthage. Nearly 20
primary care, school based
health centers and specialty
services are operated at sites
throughout Jefferson, northern
Lewis and southern St.
Lawrence counties.
All the Community Partners
primary care clinics are growing
rapidly and expanding services
including ob/gyn at the Evans
Mills, Adams and Harrisville
sites. A pediatrician service is
available at the Evans Mills
Family Health Center.
One of the major challenges
for the year is to work collaboratively
with physicians in efforts
to recruit and retain needed primary
and specialty care doctors.
The challenges facing rural
community hospitals are more
difficult with the passing of each
year. Carthage Area Hospital
faces challenges with federal
and state reimbursement cuts;
recruitment and retention of
clinical staff; and the continuing
challenges of acquiring and
maintaining costly and needed
clinical technology upgrades.
Carthage Area Hospital was
founded in 1965. It plans to develop
and maintain strong partnerships
with schools, industries,
government, other healthcare
providers and respective
community leaders. Soldiers
from the 10th Mountain Division
and Fort Drum’s Guthrie
Clinic are a vital part of Carthage
Area Hospital’s healthcare mission.

Travel Wise Tours offers
planned tour packages via motorcoach
to the public and custom
planned tours to private
groups. The company plans
trips to any destination in the
continental U.S. and Canada.
The agency’scustomer base is
mainly in the Jefferson, St.
Lawrence, Lewis and Oneida
County areas. However, it does
have have customers as far
north as Franklin County and in
Canada and also in the Syracuse
and Albany areas.
The travel industry in general
is currently booming. In adapting
to changes Travel Wise Tours
makes it their business to listen
closely to their customers in order
to get a feel as to what they
want to do.
Travel Wise Tours is noticing
an increase in the “babyboomer”
business. This customer
not only wants an exclusive
package that eliminates
any work or worry on their part
but also the flexibility in the
tour package that offers options
that they can do on their own in
their own time frame. This is often
a challenge, but the company
is trying to incorporate this
type of a package whenever
possible.
A new trend is themed travel.
Many customers are intrigued
with a tour that focuses on a certain
interest, such as a “girls’ getaway”
that includes a spa and
shopping. Other themed tours
may focus on interests in gardening,
wine, music, sports or
history.

Lewis County Hospital
adds 3 doctors to its staff
LOWVILLE — Three physicians
joined the staff of Lewis
County General Hospital during
the past year: Dr. Gerard
Crawford, obstetrician/gynecologist,
started in April with
many years of experience in the
north country. In addition, Dr.
Josefina Tan-Domingo continues
to put her retirement plans
on hold while the hospital recruits
an additional ob/gyn.

Center in Lyons Falls and plans
are being finalized to add nurse
practitioner Selena Hughes to
its expanding ob/gyn service in
early spring.
