OGDENSBURG — The
Greater Ogdensburg Chamber
of Commerce begins 2008 with a
new president and seven new
members on its board of directors.

The chamber has one full
time employee, Sandra Porter,
executive director, and a 15-
hour-a-week office assistant,
Gretchen Thompson. The
chamber office is in Ogdensburg
City Hall on the first floor
opposite the state Department
of Motor Vehicles.
The board of directors meets
at noon on the first and third
Wednesday of the month, with
the first meeting of the month
dedicated to honoring North
West Tech’s Student of the
Month. All board meeting are
open to the public and local
business people are especially
encouraged to attend.
In the works is a plan to offer
gift certificates for any member
business as a continuance of its
“Shop Locally” campaign.
“Business After Hours,” held
every few months, offers another
opportunity for members to
network, sharing what’s new in
their businesses and making
personal contacts not always
possible during regular business
hours.
The chamber’s time and efforts
are equally shared among
business advocacy, enhancing
community spirit and promoting
the city and tourism in the
area. Partnering with the
Chamber Alliance of New York,
the St. Lawrence County Chamber
of Commerce and the Seaway
Trail on tourism-related
projects affords an opportunity
for the Ogdensburg chamber to
share information about the
area as well as benefit from
those three organizations’ contacts
in Albany and Washington.
Chamber members attend
seminars and trade shows and
the chamber publishes 10,000
travel guides distributed
throughout the state and Canada
via “brochure swap meets”
personal delivery and often the
joint efforts of members.
The chamber is also a member
of the St. Lawrence Valley
International Economic Alliance,
whose members from
three Upstate ccounties, two
Canadian provinces and the
Mohawk nation meet monthly
to discuss current mutual concerns.
Presently they are working
on suggested solutions to
increase cross-border commerce,
the passport issue and
airline service to the north
country.
The chamber’s mission is to
advance the civic, commercial,
industrial and agricultural interests
of the city of Ogdensburg
and surrounding areas. In promoting
the general welfare and
prosperity of the city of Ogdensburg
and by stimulating the
public sentiment to those ends,
the chamber provides social features.
Each year the Ogdensburg
chamber conducts a contest
during EXPO to choose the subject
for an ornament depicting a
historic site in Ogdensburg.
The chamber also sponsors
many events for the community.
This year’s events include:

May 17 and 18, Communitywide
garage sale;
May 24, Car-B-Que;
June 14, Festival on the St.
Lawrence;
July 24, diaper races;
Aug. 15 to 17, International
Junior Carp Tournament;

Aug. 23 and 24, communitywide
garage sale;
Sept. 6, motorcycle poker
run and chili cook-off;
Oct. 18, giant indoor garage
sale;
Oct. 27, pumpkin carving
Contest;
Nov. 14, annual dinner and
Citizen of the Year award;
Dec. 14, holiday house tour;
Dec. 15, holiday lighting
contest.

NAHEC plans to expand
Web services beyond N.Y.
CANTON — The Northern
Area Health Education Center
Inc., 105 Main St., has expanded
its successful health career services
in Jefferson, Lewis, Clinton,
Franklin and Hamilton counties
to include six categories beyond
health care, reports Richard K.
Merchant, local manager.
Established in 2000 in Canton,
NAHEC operates My
Health Career (www.myhealthcareer.org)
and North
Star Community Career
(www.northstarweb.org) Web
sites for career exploration and
planning.
“NAHEC has also become a
WorkKeys Solutions provider
offering a variety of job-specific
skill assignments,” he reports.
NAHEC, which has eight employees,
double the number of
five years ago, is a part of the
New York State Altec System,
based in Buffalo. The parent organization
began there in 1998.
NAHEC’s plans include expansion
of Web services beyond the
state.
North country chiropractors
now offer laser therapy
Laser is the latest innovation

Dr. Towle is specializing in

be the first in St. Lawrence
