Arxx Building Products,
Apex Counstruction merge
ALEXANDRIA BAY — Arxx
Building Products recently announced
a merger with Apex
Construction Systems in the development
of green building
systems in North America.
“Using the Arxx green build
system for walls and foundations
is just a smarter way to build”, said
Jefrey Martusewicz, president of
Seaway Wall Distributing, a supplier
to about 40 dealers in New
York state. “The result is 40 to 50
percent more energy efficient
construction with buildings that
feature better indoor air quality,
are stronger for enduring storms
and are cost effective long-term.
Our company saw a substantial
growth in our sales of Arxx walls
and foundations even though we
are in a building downturn. Our
customers are recognizing the
importance of sustainable building
and now with Arxx providing
the green build system, this just
adds to our momentum.”
Arxx insulating concrete
forms consist of two expanded
polystyrene panels connected
by a polypropylene web. The
forms are stacked on the job site,
reinforced with rebar, then concrete
is poured into the forms,
creating an insulated, monolithic,
concrete wall. The result is
a wallsystem that has high energy
efficiency. Unlike wood construction,
there are no cavities
or gaps where molds can proliferate.
The airtight construction
enhances indoor air quality and
reduces sound while the
strength of the concrete walls
makes them popular in hazardous
weather areas. Arxx ICF
meets major building code
specifications and has a UL listed
two- to four-hour fire rating.

Cross-training of workers
now priority at Westelcom
Westelcom, 130 Park Place,
Watertown, provides Internet,
telephone and related services
to 2,000 businesses and 15,000
residential customers in the sixcounty
region between Lake
Ontario and Lake Champlain.
Westelcom is a subsidiary of
Chazy Westport Communications,
an independent telephone
company founded in
1905, employing 55 north country
residents.
Services include Internet
and broadband connections;
unlimited long distance calling;
IP, hosted and traditional phone
systems; computer networking;
security and file backup;
software development; domain
Web hosting and design; Web
optimization and e-
commerce; virtual private networks
and office connectivity,
and collocation.
In the last three years, reports
President Paul F. Barton, Westelcom
has invested $8 million in
networking, switching and
transport infrastructure and
$500,000 in fiber optic infrastructure
in Watertown and
Plattsburgh. In Watertown, the
investment has provided highspeed
fiber optic communications
to customers including
Samaritan Medical Center,
WWNY, Stream, the city of Watertown,
JCC, and Immaculate
Heart Central School.

Westelcom has also partnered
with Alcatel-Lucent to install
a switching platform to allow
for advanced IP capabilities
throughout the Watertown
area. It has also partnered with
or is certified with Microsoft,
Avaya, Cisco Systems, 3Com,
Comdial, Sonicwall, Compaq,
and Integral Access.
Westelcom also recently established
an outbound-call
center in the Brownell Building,
providing local capabilities for
calling campaigns, telethons,
surveys and fundraisers. Westelcom
has also partnered with
Northeast Printing on Absolutely
Business magazine.
Westelcom has also recently
introduced online data storage.
Data Safe will provide off-site
data storage of a customer’s critical
files and documents. Utilizing
Sonicwall’s VPN (virtual private
network) technology, it creates
encrypted secure tunnels to
transfer data to Westelcom’s
storage servers.
One of Westelcom’s goals is to
bring large data connections to
area businesses that provide gigabit
data speeds over fiber and
advanced electronic transmission.
With that connection, the
company will be able to host
customers’ phone systems,
servers, firewalls and data storage
devices in its facility.
Another priority is already
taking place: the cross-training
of staff and installation for new
internal procedures including
management information systems,
billing, customer resource
management, online services
and project planning systems.
FDMCH develops housing
for families living on post
FORT DRUM — Fort Drum
Mountain Community Homes
is a partnership between the
Army and Actus Lend Lease providing
housing and asset, property
and maintenance management
for military families stationed
at Fort Drum. FDMCH
involves the development of 845
new homes in master-planned
communities featuring extensive
trail networks, four state-ofthe-art
community centers and
the renovation of all 2,272 existing
homes during the initial 52-
month development period.
Construction is under way on
The Timbers, a 192-apartment
home community for single soldiers.
FDMCH finances, develops,
builds, renovates and operates
the $1.6 billion project for
50 years. To date, 450 new
homes are occupied, all community
centers and trails are
open and the renovations are 81
percent complete.
FDMCH and Actus strive to
create a community that addresses
three aspects of sustainability:
Environmental: The FDM-
CH land plan has minimal site
impact, includes a wide range of
open, green spaces, incorporates
a detailed storm water detention
plan and minimal tree
removal.
FDMCH is the largest Energy
Star development in New York
state history and implements
environmentally-sound business
practices, incorporating recycling
initiatives throughout
operations, construction and
residential services.
Social: FDMCH and its subcontractors
are communityminded,
supporting individuals,
families and organizations
both on Fort Drum and in
neighboring areas. A donation
of two Habitat for Humanity
homes worth $400,000 is currently
under construction.
Economic: FDMCH employs
more than 100 individuals
and works with 110 subcontractors.
As a major supporter of
small and local businesses,
FDMCH spent $117.5 million
locally, the majority with small
businesses, including $4.5 million
with veteran-owned organizations
since its 2005 inception.
Select Screen Printing fills
‘need in the community’
MONTAGUE — Barbara
Loomis, whose husband,
Richard Loomis, is a contractor/
mason, started her business, Select
Screen Printing, in February
2006 “to fill a need in the community.”
The family-operated, locally
owned business at 7106 Liberty

“We specialize in placing advertising
logos by the silk screen
printing method on t-shirts,
crewneck sweatshirts, hats,
hoodies and light weight jackets,”
Mrs. Loomis writes. “Our
product lines are available in a
wide size and color range. We
provide lettering and signs for
vehicles. We also participate
with businesses in their
fundraising efforts.”
Customers e-mail their logos
to the business or have one created
by a graphic designer who
works with Select Screen Printing.
Customers can approve
their logos by e-mail. Products
can be mailed or delivered in
person. “We have a turn around
time of approximately seven to
nine days barring any unforeseen
delay.”
Gray’s Flower Shop grows,
acquires another building
From its beginnings in Clayton
and later Carthage, Gray’s
Flower Shop, a four-generation
business, has grown to become
Northern New York’s largest independent
floral retailer with
stores in Watertown, Carthage
and Clayton. The acquisition
and refurbishing of a building
next door to the Watertown
shop, 1605 State St., has resulted
in a new design and call centers
which service all three retail
stores.
Much of Gray’s product is
grown in its own greenhouses
aat the Carthage location, 314 S.
James St. In recent years, inventory
has expanded to include
gift items, ornaments and plush
animals. Gray’s has also become
the area’s largest retailer of popular
Colonial At Home candles
and fragrance products.

“It’s like having a fourth
storefront,” said business owner
Scott Gray.
Mr. Gray has been asked to

Drum and all of Jefferson County,
as well as parts of St.
Lawrence and Lewis counties.
