Country club on island
continuing upgrades
WELLESLEY ISLAND —
Thousand Islands Country Club
reports its best season in recent
history during 2007. Golf memberships
tripled from the 2005
season, with daily rounds and
villa rentals including the popular
one, two and three night golf
packages all showing marked
increases. Continued upgrading
of golf course conditions, combined
with ongoing capital improvements
to the marina,
clubhouses and villas have attracted
both new and returning
customers from the U.S. and
Canada. The strong Canadian
dollar remains a major contributing
factor for the many
new golfers coming across the
border for daily play and packages.
This winter has seen the refurbishing
of the “island” docks
in the 105-slip marina, the
fourth area in as many years to
receive off-season attention.
Additional slips are being prepared
to accommodate the increased
number of boaters already
signed on for the upcoming
season. TICC continues to
offer PGA instruction through
individual lessons and clinics as
well as multi-day packages with
its affiliation with National Golf
Schools.
The tournament schedule
featuring events such as Samaritan
Foundation, Kinney Foundation,
Hospice, 84 Lumber and
many more will continue to be
hosted by the facility.
equestrian equipment
WEST CARTHAGE — E&M
Tack Shop, 33 N. Broad St., sells
equestrian supplies — saddles,
bridles, grooming equipment,
medicines, safety helmets and
anything to do with riding services.
Company president Patty
Burdick, who employs three
family members and is involved
in horse show judging, is not
planning anything new this
year. “I am afraid the economy
may be on the downside this
year, so I am going to be conservative
and try to control inventory,”
she said.
According to Burdick, her
business is always changing.
She says she reads the business
magazines and follows the
trends as they change.
“I listen to my customers,”
she says. “When they ask for
something I try to help them.
When the newest items come
out, I try to acquire a few of them
to show to people.”
“I try to help people with
training and health problems
with their horses. I advise people
on what may work for them.
If a product is not going to work
for them, I try to advise them
and direct them to something
else.”
“I sell my products locally at
my store. I have a mobile trailer,
and I head the local horse shows
and fairs. I am also planning to
attend a show in Vermont this
spring and Equine Affaire in
Massachusetts this fall.”
Waste Management takes
‘green’ approach to trash
2007 was a year of significant
change for Waste Management,
which reports it is taking the latest
advances in waste disposal
and bringing a “green” approach
to handling garbage.
WM creates enough energy to
power the equivalent of 1 million
homes each year and
processes 8 million tons of recyclables
each year.
Senior management has
committed by the year 2020 to
increase energy resources to
power the equivalent of 2 million
homes, to triple the amount
of recyclable materials
processed and to increase the
fuel efficiency and reduce the
emissions of the company’s
fleet by 15 percent.
The local group has been providing
waste and recyclable collection
and disposal services to
the local communities in Jefferson
County for more than 40
years.
Waste Management offers
single stream recycling or a
commingling of all recyclables,
which are then transported to
Recycle America in Syracuse for
sorting and processing.
In January 2007 the company
was hit by a devastating fire,
which destroyed its Felts Mills
maintenance facility and three
of its main collection vehicles.
But with teamwork and support
from the New York state group,
the company was able to continue
operations without any
negative impact to customers.
Waste Managment built a
new state-of-the-art facility that
houses both garage and offices
and is still at its old location on
Card Road, Felts Mills.
Morgia’s Pasta springs
from old family tradition
Morgia’s Pasta, a local family
run pasta and sauce manufacturing
company, started in April
1990. Rosalind Morgia and her
daughter, Mary Jo, run the dayto-day
business.
John and Rosalind Morgia began
making pasta as a Sunday
family tradition with their children
Joanne, Mary Jo and John
Jr. and donated their pasta to the
St. Anthony’s Church Bazaar for
its annual fundraiser. The Morgias
were approached by Nunzio
Speno, who owned Ann’s
Restaurant on Arsenal Street
and wanted to start buying the
pasta for his business.
The Morgias were then contacted
by Pete’s restaurant and
Fairground Inn. At that point,
the Morgias launched a business
called Jomaro’s Pasta,
based on the initials of the first
name of each family member.
The business was called Jomaro’s
for a few years, and the
family incorporated and
changed the name to Morgia’s
Pasta.
The Morgias started making
pasta in the basement of their
home with a hand-crank machine.
Soon after, they outgrew
the basement and moved to the
old Alteri’s Bakery. Since then,
Morgia’s has expanded its product
line and outgrown its facilities,
moving several times, ending
up in its present facility at
22564 Fisher Road, Watertown.
Morgia’s Pasta products are
all natural and have no preservatives.
The pasta is made with
high quality flour, eggs and water.
Spice products are made
from real dried ground spinach
and tomato for spinach- and
tomato-flavored pastas. On any
given day, Morgia’s can produce
up to 500 pounds of pasta with
its three machines. Frozen
products include manicotti,
gnocchi, cavetelli, lasagna, rigatoni
and ziti. Morgia’s also produces
and bottles its own fatfree
pasta sauce.
Pasta gift baskets are sold at
the retail location in the Industrial
Park and over the Internet.
Morgia’s has two major distributors
and a few small ones
for statewide sale and distribution.
Renzi’s Food Distributors
handles the restaurants and
Cavallaro Foods in Syracuse distributes
to the retail accounts.
Morgia’s has been a Pride of New
York Member for more than 10
years.
Due to rising costs in such
commodities as such as flour,
eggs and plastic, Morgia’s has
had to raise prices for the first
time since incorporating in
1991.
Morgia’s Pasta is open yearround
and has always been involved
with giving to many local
charities.
