28 Sunday,March 2,2008 WATERTOWN DAILY TIMES PROGRESS 2008 v BUSINESS UPDATE v Paddock Club adds stage for live acts, dance floor The Paddock Club, in the historic Paddock Arcade on the west side of Public Square in downtown Watertown, is open from 4 p.m. to midnight Sunday through Thursday and from 4 p.m. to 2 a.m. Friday and Saturday. Since taking ownership of the Paddock Club in the fall of 2005, Robert Dalton has transformed this one-room bar into an upscale three-room night club. He started with a dozen different martinis and now has a menu of 56 martinis and cosmopolitans, along with margaritas, mojitos and cocktails. There is also a menu of a dozen or so shooters served up in lighted shot glasses. He uses top-shelf liquors and wines and has 30-plus bottled beers and three draft beers on tap. There are drink specials each day and for Sundays he recently started a Bloody Mary Buffet where customers can add ingredients to make their Bloody Marys. There are seasonal drinks such as Tom and Jerrys at Christmas, served with fancy pirouette cookies. In the fall, there are pumpkin spice and apple cider martinis. During happy hour, snacks are served in oversized martini glasses on the bar and tables and nachos are offered with hot cheese sauce. Fresh-made hot popcorn is always available. Customers often bring or order food to be delivered to the Paddock. With the opening of Johnny D’s restaurant in the arcade, there will be a full menu featuring fresh cut fries, wings and burgers right down the hall. With three rooms and extra tables set up in the Arcade for the overflow, the Paddock can accommodate a large crowd for a party or similar event. The original bar room has four televisions including a large flat screen. There is a window seat with pillows and several pub tables in the bar and middle room. This last room added in June has a stage for bands, a large dance floor and sound activated light show. A window area has a raised floor with a living room set. An antique church pew provides additional seating against the wall facing the stage. The jukebox and a dart board provide music and activity on nights when there are no bands. Speakers are wired to the stereo in the bar room. In 2006, Mr. Dalton received the Downtown Business Association Business of the Year award. Training in communications, kitchen skills and other basic activities of daily living may be provided in the individual's home. Instruction in Braille may also be provided. Other services include peer support groups in Adams, Carthage, Clayton, Alexandria Bay and in Watertown, where there are two. PROGRESS 2008 WATERTOWN DAILY TIMES Sunday,March Day,Month Date,Year 2,2008 29 C5 v BUSINESS UPDATE v Jefferson County Hospice pursues concept of center Hospice of Jefferson County Inc., serving Jefferson and southern St. Lawrence counties, was founded in 1986 and provides care as needed 24 hours a day, seven days a week: managing the patient’s pain and symptoms; assisting the patient with the emotional and psychological aspects of dying; providing needed drugs, medical supplies, and equipment; coaching the family on how to take care of the patient; offering spiritual care; delivering special services like speech and physical therapy when appropriate; making short-term inpatient care available when pain or symptoms become too difficult to manage at home, or the caregiver needs respite time; and providing bereavement care and counseling to surviving family and friends. A nationwide Gallup survey for the National Hospice and Palliative Care Organization found that nine of 10 adults would prefer to be cared for at home if diagnosed with a terminal illness. However, the main barrier is the lack of a primary caregiver. In July 2005 Hospice of Jefferson County contracted with the Center for Community Studies at Jefferson Community College to conduct a market analysis for a proposed hospice community residence. It revealed that an overwhelming majority of the 300 individuals polled would choose to die at home if facing terminal illness, yet one in three could not identify an individual able to provide that care. Ninety-eight percent of the 110 health professionals surveyed had seen patients in the past year who would have been appropriate for a hospice community residence and would have referred those clients to the residence if it were available. The study concluded: “…it is with a high degree of confidence that the market demand and probable full capacity utilization of the Hospice proposed four- to six-bed residence is supported by the contracted research.” The long-range plan is the development of a hospice center combining a hospice residence with hospice administrative and foundation headquarters. The current administrative facility at 425 Washington St. lacks space (interior and parking) and energy efficiency. It is not handicapped accessible. There is no room downstairs large enough to hold bereavement and community support groups. An energy audit recently contracted revealed the cost of work and upgrades needed exceeds the worth of the building. Steven P. Duffany offers insurance plan guidance The annual Medicare enrollment period, Nov. 15 to Dec. 31, allows recipients to sign up for an advantage plan with drug coverage included or a separate drug plan and separate medical coverage, notes independent insurance broker Steven P. Duffany, who represents “many different companies with all kinds of plans” and offers guidance to clients in making their choices. Medicare recipients can change coverage during the open enrollment period, which runs from Jan. 1 to March 31. It is possible to sign up for drug coverage three months before or three months after you turn 65 or if you leave your employer’s coverage. Mr. Duffany, who has more than 26 years’ experience in the insurance business, notes questions to ask when selecting a plan: Is there an additional fee or a deductible? What are the copays? Is a Medicare supplement better for me? How about local service? How much medication am I taking? Will I get to the doughnut hole? When will the coverage take effect? A grand opening was held Nov. 4, 2006 unveiling the soft-cloth automobile wash bay and six detailing bays.
