Jefferson County Hospice
pursues concept of center
Hospice of Jefferson County
Inc., serving Jefferson and
southern St. Lawrence counties,
was founded in 1986 and provides
care as needed 24 hours a
day, seven days a week: managing
the patient’s pain and symptoms;
assisting the patient with
the emotional and psychological
aspects of dying; providing
needed drugs, medical supplies,
and equipment; coaching the
family on how to take care of the
patient; offering spiritual care;
delivering special services like
speech and physical therapy
when appropriate; making
short-term inpatient care available
when pain or symptoms
become too difficult to manage
at home, or the caregiver needs
respite time; and providing bereavement
care and counseling
to surviving family and friends.
A nationwide Gallup survey
for the National Hospice and Palliative
Care Organization found
that nine of 10 adults would prefer
to be cared for at home if diagnosed
with a terminal illness.
However, the main barrier is the
lack of a primary caregiver.
In July 2005 Hospice of Jefferson
County contracted with the
Center for Community Studies
at Jefferson Community College
to conduct a market analysis for
a proposed hospice community
residence. It revealed that an
overwhelming majority of the
300 individuals polled would
choose to die at home if facing
terminal illness, yet one in three
could not identify an individual
able to provide that care. Ninety-eight
percent of the 110
health professionals surveyed
had seen patients in the past
year who would have been appropriate
for a hospice community
residence and would have
referred those clients to the residence
if it were available.
The study concluded: “…it is
with a high degree of confidence
that the market demand
and probable full capacity utilization
of the Hospice proposed
four- to six-bed residence
is supported by the contracted
research.”
The long-range plan is the development
of a hospice center
combining a hospice residence
with hospice administrative
and foundation headquarters.
The current administrative facility
at 425 Washington St. lacks
space (interior and parking) and
energy efficiency. It is not handicapped
accessible. There is no
room downstairs large enough
to hold bereavement and community
support groups.
An energy audit recently contracted
revealed the cost of work
and upgrades needed exceeds
the worth of the building.
Steven P. Duffany offers
insurance plan guidance
The annual Medicare enrollment
period, Nov. 15 to Dec. 31,
allows recipients to sign up for
an advantage plan with drug
coverage included or a separate
drug plan and separate medical
coverage, notes independent
insurance broker Steven P. Duffany,
who represents “many different
companies with all kinds
of plans” and offers guidance to
clients in making their choices.
Medicare recipients can
change coverage during the
open enrollment period, which
runs from Jan. 1 to March 31.
It is possible to sign up for
drug coverage three months before
or three months after you
turn 65 or if you leave your employer’s
coverage.
Mr. Duffany, who has more
than 26 years’ experience in the
insurance business, notes questions
to ask when selecting a
plan:
Is there an additional fee or a
deductible? What are the copays?
Is a Medicare supplement
better for me? How about local
service? How much medication
am I taking? Will I get to the
doughnut hole? When will the
coverage take effect? How about
if I go south for the winter; will I
still be covered?
Fewer than 10 percent of beneficiaries
ever reach the “doughnut
hole,” he notes.
Duffany at 788-1885.
Bolton’s to provide service
to nursing home residents
Effective April 1, Bolton’s
Pharmacy Inc., West Main
Street, Watertown, will begin
providing the pharmacy services
for the Lewis County General
Nursing Home. As a long-termcare
pharmacy, Bolton’s will provide
the medicines for the 160
residents, along with unit-dose
packaging, medical administration
records, physician order
forms, and drug utilization and
quality management review.
Because of the ability to offer
customized medicine, Bolton’s
will also be able to offer medication
IVs and compounded medicines.
“We have been meeting with
the staff at the nursing home
and hospital, and starting the
transition process,” said Patti
Signor, Bolton’s pharmacist and
co-owner. “We want the families
of the residents to be assured
that we will work with the hospital
and their physicians to provide
the personalized medications
that meet their unique
needs, for the most positive
therapeutic outcomes.”
A locally owned, independent
business established in 1895,
Bolton’s offers a wide range of
services and customized medication
including an expanded
customized compounding program
(for humans and pets),
home IV infusion therapy services,
prescription plans for local
employers and pharmacy services
for nursing homes, and a wide
line of durable medical equipment
and home health aids.
Bolton’s Pharmacy includes a
newly installed, state-of-the-art
computerized prescription system
and has expanded its pharmacy
by more than 400 percent.
Bolton’s is a member of the Professional
Compounding Centers
of America, a training and education
organization accredited
by the Accreditation Council for
Pharmacy Education. Bolton’s is
the only PCCA member pharmacy
in the city of Watertown.
“In today’s big chain pharmacy
environment, some people
say a small independent pharmacy
such as Bolton’s is a dinosaur,”
Ms. Signor said. “We
don’t think so. In fact we believe
that our continued commitment
and focus on being the
best pharmacy we can be is ultimately
what people want.”
In March 2007, Bolton’s purchased
Northern New York Infusion
Inc., dba Optioncare, and
became the only local home infusion
service in the Watertown
area. Home infusion services,
such as TPN’s, chemotherapy,
morphine drips and IV antibiotics
are now offered to patients
in all of Northern New York.
A grand opening is planned
for later in March.
Auto Spa at Caskinette’s
celebrates 1st anniversary
CARTHAGE — The new auto
spa detail center and car wash at
Caskinette’s Lofink Ford & Mercury
is celebrating its first anniversary.
A grand opening was
held Nov. 4, 2006 unveiling the
soft-cloth automobile wash bay
and six detailing bays.
The idea for the auto spa
came about partially as a result
of the feedback from the customers
at Caskinette’s-Lofink.
“We were constantly getting
requests from our customers
and members of the community
to expand these services, and
also make them available to the
general public,” said Lynn
Leonard, general manager of
Caskinette’s-Lofink. “This expansion
and addition to our
business allowed everyone, including
people who have not
purchased their vehicles here, to
see what we can do for their cars
… in a close-by convenient location.”
“The name auto spa came
from the idea that the services
we will offer our customers in
the auto spa is like a person going
to the ‘spa’ for some real
pampering... The deluxe wash
consists of cutting-edge technology
and top-of-the-line
cleaning products, paired with
our signature personal service.
At the end of the wash, after a
thorough and gentle cleansing,
an attendant will even give your
vehicle a ‘Turkish towel rubdown.’”
In the detail center, different
levels of detailing are offered for
whatever the customer wants,
and new specials are being offered
often.
Appointments can be made
including drop-off and pickup
services.
The auto spa has helped
many local organizations, providing
fundraising assistance
equaling thousands of dollars in
the first year of its operation. In
addition to the new services offered
to the community, 15 new
jobs were created at the dealership.
The auto spa manager is
Dave Marsala II. For more information
or to schedule an auto
spa appointment, call 493-1360.
The car wash is open six days
a week; customers can drive
their vehicles in and an attendant
will take it from there. Special
are offered at the Web site,
