and we’ve had a bloody good run out of them,” Schultz says.<br />
To reinforce his comment, Schultz points out that the backup<br />
service from <strong>CablePrice</strong> service dealer, Cooke Howlison in<br />
Dunedin is almost an unknown factor.<br />
“We’ve never had a problem with our back-up service<br />
because we’ve never needed it,” he says. “They’ve been that<br />
bloody reliable, it’s never been a problem.”<br />

In fact, he points out, the only time the trucks have needed<br />
to visit Howlison’s Dunedin workshop has been to have<br />
their first couple of scheduled services. After that, Mainland<br />
Groundspread gets the servicing done by a local business in<br />
Oamaru, although Schultz states that’s more about downtime<br />
and logistics than anything else.<br />
“Dunedin’s an hour-and-a-half away, and that’s a long way on<br />
tractor-grip tyres,” he says. “That’s also time the trucks aren’t<br />
working. It would be different if we were getting paid to travel<br />
that far on a job, but if they’re not working they’re not earning,<br />
so it just makes sense for us to get them serviced here.”<br />
The company covers a considerable area from its Oamaru<br />
base, servicing a zone within a 150km radius of the depot.<br />
“It’s a pretty big area, so we need to make sure our trucks are<br />
reliable,” Schultz says.<br />
Even during the middle of winter, when groundspreading<br />
operations traditionally slow up, the company manages to<br />
keep its trucks busy, converting two of them to spray units for<br />
applying a nitrogen inhibitor on pastures.<br />
“With spraying, it gives us something to do to keep the trucks<br />
busy, so we really only have a four-week slow down in the<br />
middle of winter,” says Schultz.<br />

While performance, return-on-investment and reliability all<br />
play key roles in his assessment of the trucks, Schultz points out<br />
the guys behind the wheel have also given favourable feedback<br />
on selecting the Scania brand.<br />
“Driver acceptance of them has been really good,” he says.<br />
After 13 years of operating Mainland Groundspread Services,<br />
Schultz and his wife Nivonne have established their business<br />
based on strong performance and good reliability — attributes<br />
that are highly regarded by its South Canterbury and North<br />
Otago farming clients.<br />
