and we’ve had a bloody good run out of them,” Schultz says.
To reinforce his comment, Schultz points out that the backup
service from CablePrice service dealer, Cooke Howlison in
Dunedin is almost an unknown factor.
“We’ve never had a problem with our back-up service
because we’ve never needed it,” he says. “They’ve been that
bloody reliable, it’s never been a problem.”

In fact, he points out, the only time the trucks have needed
to visit Howlison’s Dunedin workshop has been to have
their first couple of scheduled services. After that, Mainland
Groundspread gets the servicing done by a local business in
Oamaru, although Schultz states that’s more about downtime
and logistics than anything else.
“Dunedin’s an hour-and-a-half away, and that’s a long way on
tractor-grip tyres,” he says. “That’s also time the trucks aren’t
working. It would be different if we were getting paid to travel
that far on a job, but if they’re not working they’re not earning,
so it just makes sense for us to get them serviced here.”
The company covers a considerable area from its Oamaru
base, servicing a zone within a 150km radius of the depot.
“It’s a pretty big area, so we need to make sure our trucks are
reliable,” Schultz says.
Even during the middle of winter, when groundspreading
operations traditionally slow up, the company manages to
keep its trucks busy, converting two of them to spray units for
applying a nitrogen inhibitor on pastures.
“With spraying, it gives us something to do to keep the trucks
busy, so we really only have a four-week slow down in the
middle of winter,” says Schultz.

While performance, return-on-investment and reliability all
play key roles in his assessment of the trucks, Schultz points out
the guys behind the wheel have also given favourable feedback
on selecting the Scania brand.
“Driver acceptance of them has been really good,” he says.
After 13 years of operating Mainland Groundspread Services,
Schultz and his wife Nivonne have established their business
based on strong performance and good reliability — attributes
