MEDIUM MacHine,
kinG-SIZE WORKLOAD
Auckland contractors March Cato
have added a hard-working ZAXIS-5
medium excavator to their growing
fleet, reflecting the varied nature of their
constantly expanding project work.
Since its formation in 1997 March Cato has
earned a solid reputation as a leading civil
engineering and infrastructure company.
Specialising in tunnelling, public drainage, pipejacking
and sheet-piling in often restrictive
urban environments, the company currently
has 14 excavators in its fleet covering a variety of projects
and applications.
It was taking a well-earned break the day we called in
to check out March Cato’s new ZAXIS 240LC-5 excavator,
but as project manager Nicholas Gulley attests to, it’s been
working the hard yards since coming on-line.
“This is the third new Hitachi we’ve brought in for this
job,” he says. “It’s a big project and it required all hands
on deck before the Christmas break. It’s definitely the
exception to the rule to have it sitting still right now!”
Since launching the comprehensive ZAXIS-5 series at
National Fieldays in June last year, CablePrice has been
placing ‘dash five’ variants with new owners throughout
the country. In addition to heavy duty H-Series and
demolition-orientated K-Series machines, the ZX-5
medium excavator range – of which March Cato’s
ZX240LC-5 is the midway point between the ZX200LC-5
and ZX350LCH-5 – has already received a multitude of
owner and operator praise.
“We’ve been buying Hitachi equipment since we formed
March Cato 16 years ago,” says company co-owner and
director Dick March. “Adam Cato [March Cato co-owner
and fellow director] and I still like to know everything we
can about the equipment we buy.”
“The last couple of years in particular have been
exceptionally busy for us,” says March. “We’re running a
variety of machines from 1.5-tonne up to 45-tonne, and
that’s purely a reflection of the varied scale of the work
we’re doing.
“We’re at the stage now where we came directly to
CablePrice to get this latest round of machines. We knew
what we wanted straight away, so there wasn’t any point
going anywhere else,” he says.
The nature of many March Cato worksites means
that excavators that work well in confined spaces are
ideal. Overall ZAXIS-5 excavators have already been
widely praised for their efficient hydraulics systems and
precise operating abilities. While ZX240LC-5s’ are classed
