The Center for Systems Integration and Sustainability (CSIS) at MSU is an international leader in addressing complex sustainability issues through innovative systems integration (i.e., integration of multiple disciplines including social and natural sciences and advanced technologies). CSIS conducts cutting-edge research on emer-ging frontiers of ecological sustainability, trains new generations of leading scholars for interdiscipli-nary research, and disse-minates research findings across the globe. CSIS’s work has been internationally recognized with many prestigious honors and awards. Over the past 13 years, CSIS has been actively collaborating with many organizations in China, such as the Chinese Academy of Sciences Environmental impact of a giant (e.g., the Research Center for Eco-Environmental Sciences), as well as universities (e.g., Fudan University), government agencies (e.g., the State Forestry Administration and the State Environmental Protection Administration), elementary and high schools, and the Wolong Nature Reserve for Giant Pandas in Sichuan Province. The collaborations have been supported by funding agencies in both the U.S.A. (e.g., National Science Foundation, NASA, NIH) and China (Chinese Academy of Sciences and National Natural Sciences Foundation of China). CSIS has hosted more than 10 Ph.D. students and visiting scholars from China, and has trained numerous field researchers and K-12 students in China. Many of the results have been published in the world’s top scientific journals such as Nature and Science. At the local level, CSIS researchers and collaborators have examined the complex relationships among people, policy and panda habitat in Wolong Nature Reserve. The finding that the designation of an area as a Nature Reserve is not sufficient to protect panda habitat has led to important changes in people’s perceptions and in nature reserve management. The methodology from the work in Wolong is being scaled up to evaluate panda habitat conditions across the entire geographic range in Sichuan, Gansu, and Shaanxi provinces. “CSIS has produced exceptional scientific insights, generated world-wide media coverage... and influenced policies and practices regarding sustainable development.” At the national level, CSIS researchers and collaborators have analyzed environmental challenges and policies in China. These papers were translated into Chinese and circulated among high-level government officials. Suggestions for enhancing China’s nature reserve system have helped improve China’s conservation of biodiversity (e.g., wildlife and plant species). Ecosystem Policy Institute of China 中国生态系统政策研究中心 16 The Ecosystem Policy Institute of China is a research center jointly founded by China State Forestry Administration (SFA) and Michigan State University (MSU) in October 2006. EPIC’s mission is to promote forestry sustainability and ecosystem management in China and beyond by conducting quality policy research and outreach, of which ecosystem services and management, forest products market and trade, and institutions and governance Contacts are the three focal areas. Further, while the Web: http://EPIC.msu.edu country’s leaders have stressed the desire to build a resource-conserving and environment-friendly economy to achieve sustainable and harmonious development, it is unclear how it will accomplish this grand goal. Of course, China’s commitments to environmental conservation and sustainable development are in line with its international obligations and the related global initiatives; and China’s lessons and experience can benefit many countries facing similar problems. Therefore, it is of great interest and broad relevance to study the challenges in China’s ecosystem services and sustainability. It was based on these considerations that MSU and SFA decided to establish EPIC – an innovative platform of international collaboration in an important area of policy research. Dr. Runsheng Yin of MSU’s Department of Forestry has been appointed as its Director, with half of his work time in China. In October 2006, Dr. Kim A. Wilcox, MSU Provost, met with Mr. Jianlong Zhang, Deputy Administrator of the SFA in Beijing to sign a memorandum of understanding for the establishment of EPIC. On October 19, 2007, MSU’s College of Agriculture and Natural Resources and China National Forestry Economics and Development Research Center held an international conference in Beijing to evaluate China’s ecological restoration programs. At that event, EPIC was inaugurated by Mr. Yucai Li, SFA Deputy Administrator and Dr. J. Ian Gray, MSU Vice President for Research and Graduate Studies. EPIC’s current projects include: The Driving Forces and Environmental Consequences of Land-Use and Land-Cover Changes in the Upper Yangtze Basin and An Integrative Impact Evaluation of China’s Ecological Restoration Programs, which are funded by the U.S. National Science Foundation, and China’s Forest Sector: Market Modeling and Policy Analysis, which is supported by the U.S. Forest Service and Ford Foundation. In addition to his MSU and SFA colleagues, Runsheng has collaborators from the Chinese Academy of Sciences, the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences, Peking University, and Northwest Agriculture & Forestry University.
