Confucius Institute at <strong>Michigan</strong> <strong>State</strong> <strong>University</strong><br />
is a collaborative effort between <strong>Michigan</strong><br />
<strong>State</strong> <strong>University</strong> and <strong>China</strong> Central Radio<br />
and Television <strong>University</strong> under the authorization<br />
and sponsorship <strong>of</strong> the <strong>Office</strong> <strong>of</strong> Chinese Language<br />
Council International. It is the first and the only online<br />
Confucius Institute worldwide. Its mission is to develop<br />
high quality online Chinese language and culture learning<br />
programs and disseminate them world-wide through<br />
innovative uses <strong>of</strong> technologies.<br />
The institute <strong>of</strong>fers a wide range <strong>of</strong> online programs and<br />
activities for K-12 students and adults to learn Chinese and<br />
experience <strong>China</strong>. The institute has developed a series <strong>of</strong><br />
innovative online Chinese language and culture learning<br />
materials and programs, including: web casting <strong>of</strong> seven<br />
sets <strong>of</strong> video series sequenced to progressively support<br />
Chinese learning; daily podcast series designed to teach<br />
Chinese through casual conversations; dynamic multimedia<br />
program that teaches the history and evolution <strong>of</strong> Chinese<br />
characters and their modern forms; interactive multimedia<br />
system for learning Chinese language and culture developed<br />
specifically for high school students; 40-unit set <strong>of</strong><br />
Chinese culture learning materials that can be used right out<br />
<strong>of</strong> the box <strong>by</strong> any teacher regardless <strong>of</strong> Chinese language<br />
pr<strong>of</strong>iciency; one-on-one<br />
online tutoring services<br />
that provide learners<br />
with convenient, customized<br />
support from<br />
tutors in <strong>China</strong>; multiplayer<br />
online role playing<br />
games for learning Chinese,<br />
and immersive virtual<br />
worlds for Chinese<br />
learning. The institute<br />
also <strong>of</strong>fers online Chinese<br />
courses to middle<br />
school, high school as well as college level students.<br />
CI-MSU also consults with schools and other organizations<br />
to develop and <strong>of</strong>fer customized Chinese language<br />
and cultural learning programs. In 2007, the institute<br />
recruited 18 qualified teachers from <strong>China</strong> to teach customized<br />
Chinese language and culture programs in school districts,<br />
providing pre-service training<br />
and constant in-service pr<strong>of</strong>essional<br />
development and support. The institute<br />
has also been hosting Chinese<br />
language and culture summer camps<br />
both locally and in <strong>China</strong> to stimulate<br />
K-12 students’ interest in Chinese language<br />
and culture.<br />
In between developing and disseminating<br />
Chinese language and culture<br />
programs, CI-MSU also engages in<br />
conceptualizing and experimenting<br />
with innovative pedagogies to provide<br />
learners with greater learning<br />
experience and to advance the fields<br />
<strong>of</strong> teaching Chinese as foreign language<br />
and online language learning in<br />
general.<br />
Since its establishment in 2006, the Institute has served<br />
nearly 1,000 K-12 students from nearly 10 states in the US<br />
and students from other countries through its online programs<br />
and over 2,000 students through its face-to-face<br />
programs and summer camps.<br />

立 适 合 当 地 情 况 的 汉 语 和 中 国 文 化 学 习 项 目 。 在 2007 年 , 学<br />
院 从 中 国 聘 请 了 18 位 对 外 汉 语 教 师 , 在 学 区 开 设 汉 语 和 中 国<br />
