Joint Research Efforts on Food Safety
在 食 品 安 全 领 域 的 合 作 研 究
Michigan State University has earned a reputation
as a leader among United States universities in
food safety related research, education and
outreach programs. It has four major institutions
on campus with a focus on food safety and quality:
1. National Food Safety and Toxicology Center
(NFSTC) conducts research on chemical and
microbial hazards in foods and natural products
and uses the knowledge to develop a safer food
supply in the United States and abroad;
2. Institute for Food and Agricultural Standards
(IFAS) is an interdisciplinary teaching, research,
and policy analysis institute that focuses on the
social, economic, political, and ethical aspects of
grades and standards.
3. Institute for Food Laws and Regulations (IFLR)
disseminates information on food laws and
regulations at the state, federal and international
levels. IFLR has been approved as a Collaborating
Center by the World Health Organization.
4. Department of Food Science and Human Nutrition
(FSHN) is one of the premier food science
departments in the United States, ranked among
the top three programs in recent years.
Food Safety Research
“The Role of Third Party Certification for Food Safety in
China” is a joint research program between MSU and the
Chinese Academy of Agricultural Sciences (CAAS). The
project is jointly funded by USDA and Chinese Ministry of
Agriculture. MSU and CAAS scientists jointly conducted
survey research in the Chinese cities of Guangzhou, Shenzhen,
Hangzhou, and Qingdao in 2005 to examine the effects of
Third Party Certification on Chinese food policy. A major
outcome of the project was the October 2007 “International
Symposium on Certification and Traceability for Food Safety
and Quality” in Beijing.
Food safety Lecture Tour
From April 9 to 20, 2006, MSU organized a five facultymember
delegation to the Chinese Academy of Agricultural
Sciences (CAAS), Jiangsu Academy of Agricultural
Sciences (JAAS), Zhejiang Academy of Agricultural
Sciences (ZAAS), and Zhejiang University to present
lectures on topics involving food safety related risk
assessment. In 2005-2006, MSU signed agreements with
CAAS, JAAS, and ZAAS respectively, to establish a joint
food safety research lab. This lecture tour represents MSU’s
continuing cooperation with Chinese institutions on food
safety research.

中 国 食 品 安 全 的 作 用 ” 是 一 项 由 密 西 根 州 立 大 学 和 中
国 农 业 科 学 院 共 同 承 担 的 研 究 项 目 。2005 年 , 来 自 美 方
的 科 学 家 和 中 国 科 研 人 员 一 起 , 在 广 州 、 深 圳 、 杭 州 、 以
及 青 岛 等 多 个 城 市 进 行 了 调 查 , 以 了 解 第 三 方 认 证 对 中
国 食 品 政 策 的 影 响 。2007 年 十 月 在 北 京 的 召 开 的 “ 国 际
食 品 安 全 和 质 量 认 证 及 可 追 溯 性 研 讨 会 ” 为 此 项 研 究 项
目 画 上 了 一 个 完 美 的 句 号 。
食 品 安 全 巡 回 讲 座
2006 四 月 九 日 至 二 十 日 之 间 , 密 西 根 州 立 大 学 组 织
了 由 五 位 专 家 成 员 组 成 的 代 表 团 先 后 对 中 国 农 业 科 学
院 , 江 苏 农 业 科 学 院 , 浙 江 农 业 科 学 院 , 和 浙 江 大 学 进 行
了 访 问 。 代 表 团 就 食 品 安 全 和 食 品 风 险 评 估 方 面 进 行 了
一 系 列 的 讲 座 。 在 2005-2006 年 间 , 密 西 根 州 立 大 学 和
中 国 农 科 院 , 江 苏 农 科 院 , 以 及 浙 江 农 科 院 分 别 达 成 协
议 建 立 联 合 实 验 室 或 研 究 中 心 以 促 进 食 品 安 全 领 域 的
研 究 。 该 巡 回 讲 座 是 密 西 根 州 立 大 学 积 极 努 力 和 中 国 相
关 部 门 进 行 食 品 安 全 研 究 合 作 的 又 一 明 例 。
联 合 举 办 国 际 会 议
2004 年 11 月 , 密 西 根 州 立 大 学 与 中 国 国 务 院 发 展 研
究 中 心 、 中 国 科 学 技 术 部 、 中 国 商 务 部 共 同 在 北 京 举 办
了 “ 全 球 食 品 安 全 论 坛 ”。

In recent years, Michigan State University has been actively
working with its Chinese partners on food safety issues
through joint research programs, establishment of joint
research labs, conducting lecture tours, and organizing joint
forums and symposia.

In November 2004, MSU co-sponsored the “Global Food
Safety Forum” with Development Research Center of the
Chinese State Council, the Chinese Ministry of Science and
Technology and the Ministry of Commerce in Beijing.
